Dr. Thomas Gordon Teacher Effectiveness Training(T.E.T) Andrea Sullins Behavior & Classroom Management
T.E.T. Overview • This program offers teachers the essential communication skills and conflict resolution skills they need in order to have high quality relationships with their students. • This approach is to help teachers and students develop a meaningful and mutually beneficial relationship.
How Teachers Will Benefit • The teacher will have less stress. • Students will give more respect & consideration for the teacher. • The class will experience fewer classroom disruption & conflicts. • The teacher will notice fewer discipline problems.
How Students Will Benefit • Students will have increased academic achievement. • Students will have increased responsibility & self-control. • The students will have an increased desire to cooperate & learn. • The students will have an increased ability to work in group situations.
How T.E.T. Works • This is a 45 hour program that is designed to actively involve participants in their own learning process. • The program has 4 steps.
The Steps • Step 1--Structure: instructor presentations, in-class reading, audio & visual aids. • Step 2--Involvement: role-plays, workbook exercises, & one on one skill practice. • Step 3--Process: group discussions, one on one sharing & reflection to explore new leanings & insights. • Step 4--Application: individual & group activities to consolidate learning and make specific action plans. Involves workbook & text reading along with out-of-class skill practice assignments.
What Participants Learn • "Observing Behaviors" –This will teach participants how to observe behaviors without making judgments on the behavior itself. • "Identifying Problem Ownership“ -This teaches participants to understand problems in relationships and how to handle them.
What Participants Learn(cont) • "No-Lose Conflict Resolution" to resolve conflicts with students and others so both are satisfied with the solution • "Values Collision Skills" to resolve values collisions with students and others • "Active Listening" –This teaches participants how to enable students and others to solve their own problems.
What Participants Learn(cont) • "Self-Disclosure" –This will teach participants how to express ideas and feelings in clear, direct, non-blameful ways using I-messages. • "Confrontation" –This teaches participants how to confront other's unacceptable behavior which results in the other person changing his/her behavior.
Sum It Up • In short participants will learn how to talk to students so that they will listen and how to set up classroom rules so that far less enforcement is necessaryso the class may increase the overall time on task.
What T.E.T. looks like in the classroom • The classroom is run as a democratic entity. Students have a say in the rules. Punishment is discouraged &conflict is dealt with using I-messages. The teacher spends time teaching students how to problem-solve & provides them with techniques to help them negotiate properly. • I-message example: Billy is punched by John. Billy would say, “John I feel badly when I am hit.”
Strength/Weakness • Weakness: • A lot for a teacher to take on—45 hour program. • Teacher has little power in the classroom. • It is time consuming for students to go through I-messages when conflicts arrive because the students must also be trained. • Severe behaviors often need much more than an I-message to be changed. • Strength: • Stresses the importance of communication. • Helps students understand another’s point of view.
