Are You Old School or New School? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/digitalnation/resources/teachers/#3 • New SchoolYou're enthusiastic about digital technology as a tool for transforming education, and you support collaborative, student-centered approaches to learning. • HopefulYou know that technology can engage students in learning and help teachers transmit the knowledge and skills students need for a well-rounded education. • Old SchoolYou're not convinced that technology is the answer to the challenges educators face today. You see the future of education as continuing in the tradition that has been established by previous generations. • Skeptic • The quality of instruction is what matters most. Student- centered approaches really make a difference in improving learning. Technology isn't really the solution here.

Making the Connection - Example 4th Grade – Sample ELA Lesson Sample Student Outcome: Students demonstrate understanding of a text or texts by working together to identify and ask significant questions to clarify various points of view. EXAMPLE: Students participate in literature circle discussions of a chapter from a book they have read and for which they prepare open-ended discussion questions. They use a voice recorder to record their discussion. They then listen to the recording, evaluating the effectiveness of points raised in response to the questions, insights shared, and balance of participation. The recording is published as a podcast with accompanying reflections on the quality of the discussion.
