Slam the Door Softly • Antigone Drama
In the play, Slam the Door Softy, Nora is leaving her husband Thaw to start her own career. • Nora starts by telling Thaw everything he will need to know while she is gone, but Thaw is too busy ignoring her that he doesn’t notice she is leaving him until she tries to walk out the door. • Thaw tries everything to keep Nora from leaving him but because Thaw never listens and ignores Nora constantly, Nora still proceeds to leave him. • Nora leaves Thaw because she wants to be more than a housewife, she wants a career, she also wants to show him that she can do other things besides being a mother and housewife. • In the end Nora leaves Thaw, Nora loves Thaw but after the way he’s treated her and belittled her, she could no longer stay with him. Slam the Door Softly
In the play, Antigone, Antigone is punished for burying her brother. • Creon is the King of Thebes and the uncle of Antigone, he created this law that they couldn’tbury Antigone’s brother because he fought for the other side. • Antigone went against the law and buried her brother, when Creon found out that Antigone had broken the law, he sent her away and abandoned her. • Antigone and Harmon were supposed to get married, but after Antigone had broken the law Harmon agreed with his father Creon and decided that he wouldn’t marry her “Father, I’m your son…you in your wisdom set my bearings for me—I obey you. No marriage could ever mean more to me than you, whatever good direction you may offer.” • Harmon agrees with his father and no longer wants to marry Antigone. • In the end, Antigone hangs herself because Harmon doesn’t want to be with her and she knew that she would die alone there. For my modern piece I chose a scene from the movie Dear John. • In the movie, John and Savanna have been dating for a couple of months, John is away in the army and Savanna is home. John and Savanna send letters back and forth to each other to stay connected. • In this scene, John receives a letter from Savanna telling him that she can no longer be in a relationship with him, and that she found someone new and is getting married. • I choose this clip because its shows how their love has died and after receiving this letter, he takes all the letters he has saved from her and burns them all, trying to erase her from his memory.
