Baker College Windows Server 2003 Curricula • A four-year, 2+2 bachelor’s degree program in Network Security that leads to MCSE: Messaging and MCSE: Security • A two-year, associate’s degree program in Computer Networking that leads to MCSA: Messaging certification • A certificate program that is essentially the Associate’s program minus any math Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008
Current Situation • Each campus that implements the Microsoft curriculum is a Microsoft IT Academy • All college curriculum is standardized across all Baker College campuses (“The System”) • We have agreed among ourselves to use MOAC textbooks where available; otherwise MOC Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008
Current Situation • At the Flint campus (6000 students), enrollment supports the two-year programs, and infrequently we can run the bachelor’s program • The Baker System upgraded the associate’s degree and certificate programs for Server 2008 to lead to MCITP: Server Administrator • Each campus can decide to remain on the Server 2003 curriculum or move forward to Server 2008 Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008
Associate Degree Curriculum Year 1 • Fall Year 1 • Essentials of Networking (Network+) • Introduction to Programming • Winter Year 1 • Introduction to Operating System Concepts (A+) • Introduction to Hardware Concepts (A+) • Introduction to Database Applications • Spring Year 1 • Database Management Using SQL • TS: Configuring Microsoft Windows Vista Client (MOAC 70-620) • Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows XP Professional (70-270) Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008

Hardware Considerations • As of fall, 2007, our networking labs were upgraded to HP XW4400 Core 2 Duo machines w/ 4 GB RAM and removable secondary hard drive as part of Baker’s normal hardware upgrade cycle • This is sufficient to run the Virtual PC labs with multiple VMs simultaneously Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008
Baker Encourages Certification By: • Maintaining IT Academy status • Offering MSDNAA to students • Selling certification vouchers at a discount • Maintaining a testing center • Advising students on the desirability of certification • Displaying Microsoft Learning promotional materials • Ongoing training which has led to both subject matter and MCT certification for our instructor Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008
CertificationRealities • We do not collect certification statistics from our students • Seen as a privacy issue • Anecdotally, few of our students achieve certification • Cost of the certification exams, even at 50% off commercial pricing, seems to be prohibitive • Seeking ways to help our students even more Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008
Still To Be Accomplished: • Installing a Prometric testing center to save travel time and expense for our students • Convincing our Admissions department that: • We have a solid program in Microsoft networking • There are jobs in the real world, even in Flint • Reducing the cost of certification testing even further, perhaps absorbing it completely • Institute “Cram for Exam” sessions before groups of students attempt certification exam Your Roadmap to Success with Windows Server 2008
Microsoft IT Academy Program • Many benefits that enhance your program • Discounted certification testing ($US60) • Microsoft E-learning • Free MSDNAA • Free MCT membership for one instructor • Free TechNet membership • Access to Microsoft E-reference library • Lab licenses for Microsoft Office • Marketing assistance
Microsoft IT Academy Program • Requirements: • Must use Microsoft Learning material as primary curriculum; could be E-learning • Can use any other material as secondary source • Instructor must be certified in the course s/he teaches • Full MCT not required • Annual membership fee
