Iowa Firsts: Leading the Way in Equality • First public university in United States • to admit women and men on an equal basis (1855) • to grant a law degree to a woman (1873) • to grant a law degree to an African American (1879) • with an African American on an athletic squad (1895) • to officially recognize a gay student organization (1970) • First university to devote a program to rehabilitating children with disabilities • The Daily Iowan was the first daily campus newspaper west of the Mississippi (1901), and was the nation’s first with a female editor (1907) The first international student to receive a UI degree was John H. Rapier of Kingston, Jamaica. UI conferred a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1864.
