  4. Early Childhood Learners First Graders are Early Childhood Learners! They need: • To have clear and consistent expectations • Routines: Consistency • Time • To Explore • To Connect • To Discover • To Process • To Apply New Knowledge • Practice

  6. My Part • To provide an environment that allows children to learn through experiences and associations. • To facilitate discussions within groups or one on one that will further thinking. • To nurture an excitement of learning and a true love of reading and writing.

  7. Your Part • Talk each day with your child about the social and academic experiences they have had. • Relax and enjoy your one on one reading time with your first grader. • Correspond with me often.

  8. The Student’s Part • To be a good citizen • To give their best efforts • To take ownership of actions and learning. “Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself." -- Chinese Proverb

  9. READING: The Main Event • The most important points about nightly reading: • Keep the focus on enjoyment and bonding • Rereading books is important practice!! It builds confidence and fluency. • If your child wants to read a book that you feel is too baby or easy, LET THEM. • If your child wants to read a book that you know is too hard, LET THEM but sit close and help as needed. • TALK~ TALK~ TALK about the story!!! I am always available to talk to you about your child’s progress. Please feel free to contact to me anytime.

  10. Writing: Writing is a major focus for first graders! • We will write pieces about ourselves, our families, our environment and our learning. • We will learn to write through reading! We will read hundreds of samples of writing composed by acclaimed authors. • Reading is the soul mate of writing.

  11. Homework • Working a 60 week… • Read each night for 10-15 minutes • Please remember that reading is not suppose to be a chore. If you have to make silly voices to make your child enjoy a story time, please do it!  • Please remember that your reading to them is as important as their reading to you.
