Rate of malposition of external ventricular drains- an audit Mr G Narenthiran Mr Barrie D White Department of Neurosurgery Queen’s Medical Centre University Hospital Nottingham, UK
Reason for the study • Complication related to external ventricular drains is often quoted as around 3 % • How are we doing?
Data Collection • Theatre log book (14 Feb 2003 – 13 Feb 2004) • All EVDs • Repeat EVDs • Reason for repeat EVDs
Results • Database
Summary of the results • No of patients underwent EVDs = 84 • More than 1 EVD = 13 patients (15.4 %) • Malposition was noted in 8 patients (9.5 %)
Discussion • Practice need to be improved • Basic neurosurgery procedures undertaken should be audited as well • It is important to quote ‘in-house’ rates of complication than those from literature
How? • Protocol – setting up standard protocol • Use of ultrasound guidance in difficult ventriculostomies Repeat audit after changes had been implemented
