  3. The IP toolbox…. What for? • Numerous forms of IP tools… • Know-How, Trade Secrets, Patents, Trademarks EXCLUSIVITY RIGHTS @ Bench Market DISCLOSURE PRIVATE PUBLIC

  4. PUBLISH or…. PATENT???? • GROSS GOAL = SAME Make a technology known -> PUBLIC DOMAIN • Degree of FREEDOM: DIFFERENT……….. • Publication -> NO Property right • Patent -> property right -> commercial exclusivity Patentingsecures freedom of choice… …..whether to commercialize an invention…. OR …..to make it available for free to the public

The University as a place of COLLABORATION… • WSU has many active collaborations ...Esp. with governmental agencies such as the DoD • WSU has / seeks other partnerships … esp. corporate partners • Adequate management of information is important to them …Therefore it should be important tous…. • Remember…. Funding… credibility… leverage…. MANAGE INFORMATION DISCLOSURE!!!

  6. Disclosure management….(1) • One never knows whether a project today may not be subject to a collaboration with a corporation or governmental agency tomorrow…… • One never knows whether he/she will not be interested in seeking commericalization….. Or company creation….

  7. Disclosure management……(2)THEREFORE…. • Disclose soundly….. • YOU are the scientific experts….. YOU know better than anybody else what is public vs. confidential • Collaborate w/other scientists! But manage the information you exchange…. • Any doubt???? Please contact the TTO! • Beware of “business” outfits….. ……..Seeking “general information… offering help…. DISCLOSED = OUT OF YOUR CONTROL

Conclusion • Need to reconcile cultural differences industry/ government agencies/ academia =>economic development • Technology Transfer vector of economic development requires management of information • TTO is available to HELP you to better manage information • Contact TTO at will, esp. when in doubt… #2651!
