Palm Concept • Emphasis = PC Adjunct NOT PC Replacement • Function = Data collection/viewing NOT Processing • Therefore: • More efficient = faster software • Cheaper hardware • Don’t need fast processors (33MHz vs 206MHz) • Require less memory (8MB vs 32MB) • Slower processor/less memory = battery life
Palm OS • Two basic file types: • *.PRC • Application files (like .EXE/.COM) • *.PDB • Database files linked to parent application • Files are hidden from user • Can be accessed using an ‘Explorer’-like utility • Because files linked, installing/uninstalling is easy and litter-free!

Adobe Acrobat Reader • Currently v2 beta – supports Hires • PC based conduit software required to process standard PDF files for optimal viewing on Palm • Advantages: • Uses PDF format = widespread distributable • Freeware • But to produce PDF files requires Adobe Acrobat ~£200 • Disadvantages: • Variable results
