  1. Child Heart Treatment Congenital Heart Disease: Causes and Treatments

  2. What is Congenital Heart Disease Congenital Heart Disease is the most common type of Birth defect in the world found in every 1 in 100 babies born globally. Symptoms of this disease are a blue tinge to the skin of the child, rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, swelling in the legs, tummy and around the eyes, shortness of breath in the babies during feeding which makes it hard for them to gain weight. In adults and older children symptoms are dizziness or fainting and tiring quickly upon exertion.

  3. Common Pediatric Heart Conditions

  4. Atrial Septal Defect(ASD) What is meant by this defect: Atrial septum is the wall between right and left atria which keeps blue blood without oxygen and red blood with oxygen separate. When a hole exists in this atrial septum wall it is called Atrial Septal Defect.

  5. Types of ASD: • Secundum atrial septal defect: This defect is by far the most common ASD defect representing 80% of all ASD defects. This is an opening in the wall between the chambers. • Primum ASD: Primum ASD defects are associated with a split in the leaflet of the valve and are also called cleft mitral value. • Sinus Venosus ASD: In this defect one or more pulmonary veins, which normally carry oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the left atrium, enters the right atrium instead mixing the red blood with blue blood.

  6. Transposition of Great Arteries(TGA) What is meant by this defect: • Transposition refers to the 2 tubes exchanging their respective positions i.e. the right sided blue blood carrying tube going to the lungs now in this condition comes out of the left pump but carries red blood and goes to the lungs (it takes red blood to get more oxygen ?-does not work out !) • The aorta which is supposed to carry red blood comes out of the right sided ventricle and carries blue blood to the whole body.

  7. Ventricular Septal Defect(VSD) What is meant by this defect: A defect in the wall which separates the ventricles is called a VSD. What are ventricles? Heart has 2 pumps, pumping blood is the main function of the heart; the 2 pumps are separated by a wall called ventricular septum.
