4-6 Formalizing Relations & Functions Objective: TO determine whether a relation is a fn, find domain, find range, and use fn notation.
4-6 Formalizing Relations & Functions • A relation is a pairing of numbers in one set, called the domain, with numbers in another set, called the range. The relation is often represented by ordered pairs (x, y). • Domain is x values (Independent) • Range is y values (Dependent) • Remember a fn is defined as every input as one and only one output.
4-6 Formalizing Relations & Functions • Identify domain and range of each relation and represent the relation with a mapping diagram. Is the relation a fn? • {(-2, 0.5}, (0, 2.5), (4, 6.5), (5, 2.5)}
4-6 Formalizing Relations & Functions • Another way to check if a relation is a function is to analyze the graph using the vertical line test. That is if any vertical line passes through more than one point of the graph, IT IS NOT a function.
