  4. Mission Statement • Individually, our family members will be responsible for the groups within it by showing leadership, initiative, sensitivity, enthusiasm and control. Staff and students alike will have exceptionally high expectations of their own and others’ behaviour and conduct. In response to staff’s nurture and respect for all students, students will show unswerving obedience to all staff.

Objectives • A) to engage students and staff in professional theatre practice that will inspire and motivate them • B) to provide excellent teaching and workshops which students and staff will apply back in the UK in curricular and extra-curricular work • C) to provide a challenging and enriching introduction to aspects of Spanish culture • D) to create a whole group sense of ‘family’; members are aware of their responsibilities and dependency on each other • E) To provide the best accommodation, food, transport and resources we can afford

F) to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate leadership • G) to provide a safe, healthy and emotionally secure trip • H) to create a staff-team which is flexible, open, responsive, and sensitive to each person’s needs • I) to ensure the trip is run in accordance with the Christian values and ethos of Harris School

Feedback • SMT: ‘The extent to which both confidence and care developed amongst the students was outstanding.’ • SMT: ‘It was incredible to see such leadership and nurturing amongst the students.’ • SMT: ‘The planning of the trip was faultless and the high expectations and mutual responsibility were made clear from the onset.’ • SMT: ‘It was a great mixture of focused tutoring but also a rich cultural experience of Spanish language, lifestyle, art, dance and food which I’m sure will stay with us a lifetime.’ • Staff: ‘The dedication to raising achievements and expectations of the students by Mr. Browning and his team would be hard to surpass.’

Other structures • House system – older mature students care for younger ones • Mature students are known as Reps and it is their duty to be the ‘inside’ eyes and ears of the staff. • A ‘house’ is a boys and girls room. • Students sleep in single sex rooms. We try to be flexible about rooming with friends. • Mr Mosley runs a bank.

Student Leaders • The students’ pastoral needs are in part met by the student Reps. • The student Reps are like senior prefects. • Each room has a student Rep. • Reps offer leadership and guidance to other students and in particular their room-mates. • The Reps meet daily with staff to share their observations of students. Staff also sound-out proposals with Reps.

  10. Structure • Day one: travelling • Day two: arrive and relax and reconnaissance • Day three: workshops • Day four: Barcelona • Day five: workshops and Figures • Day six: workshops and Performance • Day seven: depart • Day eight: return home

  11. Itinerary • Day 1 11.30am: Leave Harris School 5.00pm: Dover, Ferry • Day 2 2.00pm: Arrive 3.00pm: Pizza on the waterfront 4.00pm: Beech play (no water activities) 7.30pm: Evening Meal 8.00pm: Guided Tour of Tossa-de-Mar 10.00pm: Bed

  14. Day 5 • 8.00am: Breakfast 9.00am: Workshop 1.00pm: Lunch 2.00pm: Leave for Salvador Dali Museum, Figures 6.00pm: Evening Meal 7.30pm: Relaxation 8.30pm: Early Bed or Flamenco Visit 10.00pm: Bed

What our practitioners have said of us: • ‘I have worked in a large number of school settings and found the Harris School to have the most mature, caring and supportive attitude towards it pupils. Expectations were rigorously high, but support and praise were equally strong.’ • ‘I have worked with the Harris School students in both Italy and Spain, and they are always a pleasure to work with. The students and teachers are supportive of each other, have a high level of respect for each other which creates a space for them to be playful, create and explore.’
