Ammonia In The Nitrogen Cycle Sarai Delgado 11th - Chemistry
Steps for the Nitrogen Cycle: • Nitrogen Fixation • Conversion of Nitrogen • Assimilation • Ammonification • Nitrification • Denitrification The Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen fixation is a method used that changes atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia or other organic compounds. This method is used in the nitrogen cycle. The nitrogen fixing bacteria changes the atmospheric nitrogen with the nitrogenase enzyme. This enzyme combines gaseous nitrogen and hydrogen to make ammonia. Rhizobium, a nitrogen fixing bacteria, produces ammonia in exchange for carbohydrates. Soil that has poor nutrients can be planted with legumes to make it more fertile and have more nitrogen. How do bacteria produce ammonia?
Ammonia is produced using the Haber- Bosch Process. It is one of the highest produced inorganic chemicals. Basically, natural gas is turned into hydrogen. Sulfur is removed from the gas and it is converted into zinc sulfide. The entire Haber- Bosch process is used to make ammonia. Industrial Production Of Ammonia
Ammonia that is produced by bacteria is made with an enzyme so it is being made forever. On the other hand, industrially made ammonia costs money to make and it is being made chemically using machines. Making ammonia industrially is more costly than making it naturally. In my opinion, making ammonia naturally is the best option. The Differences
Ammonia production needs a lot of natural gas, which is a finite resource, to make hydrogen. Approximately 3-4% of the world’s natural gas is used up making ammonia. In my opinion this number is pretty high and it should be dropped. Energy Consumption for Traditional Methods
Because ammonia is so desirable sustainable methods are trying to take over industrial methods. • Some of the methods are: 1. Natural gas being replaced by renewable energy to make hydrogen. It uses electrolysis of water. 2. Waste water also has ammonia so nitrification is used to take the ammonia out of it. Alternative Methods
