Drinking Age Debate By Josh Piske Section VF 4-13-12
Argument for lowering the age to 18 • Almost all adult rights are received at 18 • Vote, Enlist in the Military, Serve on Juries • 18 year olds still told that they are “too immature” to consume alcohol
Amethyst Initiative • People concerned about lack of progress in the reduction of alcohol issues among college students • Amethyst Initiative • Signed by 135 college chancellors across country • The Amethyst Initiative is a group that believes “alcohol education that mandates abstinence as the only legal option has not resulted in significant constructive behavioral change among our students” • Amethyst Initiative calls for the United States government to lower the drinking age to 18 • “Keeping the drinking age at 21 promotes unsafe drinking” • Drinking is being driven “underground” to apartment parties instead of being monitored at public places such as a bar • College chancellors believe an increase in alcohol-poisoning rates among college students due to off-campus parties
Argument for leaving the age at 21 • Main Reason: SAFETY • According to a survey by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 26,000 lives from young adults have been saved by keeping the drinking age at 21 since 1976. • Also stated in that survey is that two in five teenage deaths are due to automobile accidents • Means that automobile accidents are number one cause of death for teenagers in the United States • NHTSA also found that alcohol was involved in one-third of these life-ending injuries (due to driving under the influence or getting into an accident with someone who is)
Main Point • Both sides just want young people to be safe • The debate on where to keep the appropriate drinking age could be mediated by a strong alcohol education program in order to achieve a drinking license.
AlcoholEdu • AlcoholEdu is a program in which college students must complete an alcohol information seminar before moving in on their designated college campus • Stanford Success • 71% of students claimed program was somewhat effective • 77% of students saying they learned at least one thing from the program • Although program was somewhat successful, binge drinking and driving is still a pressing issue
Mediation • “Choose Responsibility” • Developed by President of Middlebury College • Organization that seeks the best way to lower alcohol abuse • Proposes a program similar to driver’s education • This course would contain an experienced alcohol instructor “trained specifically to cover the legal, ethical, health and safety issues of the curriculum and skilled in dealing with young adults” • Course would consist of classwork and a final exam • Once final exam is passed student is “licensed”
Mediation • “Choose Responsibility” states that it is different than previous alcohol education programs in that it will “provide accurate, truthful and unbiased alcohol education for both drinkers and abstainers” • “It would acknowledge the social reality of alcohol in American society, but it would advocate neither abstinence nor consumption. It would seek only to create a basis for responsible choices where alcohol is concerned” • Would involve real life situations • DUI hearings • Drunk Driving crashes • Collaborate with family- uniting teaching and the home
