  1. Galaxies Chapters 30.1 & 30.2

  2. A. Variable Stars - stars that vary in brightness as they expand and contract at regular intervals. Cepheid variable stars – have long pulsation periods of between 1 and 100 days. - this longer pulsation period allows astronomers to calculate their distance from Earth.

  3. Video – Deep Space through Hubble (2:21 min) B. Types of galaxies 1. Elliptical galaxies 2. Spiral galaxies The giant elliptical galaxy ESO 325-G004. (Wikipedia) An example of a spiral galaxy, the Pinwheel Galaxy (also known as Messier 101 or NGC 5457) (Wikipedia)

  4. 3. Barred-Spiral galaxies 4. Irregular galaxies NGC 1300, an example of a barred spiral galaxy. (Wikipedia) NGC 1427A, an example of an irregular galaxy about 52 Mly distant. (Wikipedia)

  5. C. The Milky Way Galaxy - The Milky Way Galaxy is a typical spiral galaxy containing about 100 billion stars. - The galaxy measures about 100,000 light-years across. - The older stars are located in the center of the galaxy with the younger stars in the spirals. Our Sun The Milky Way Galaxy (Wikipedia)

  6. - The Milky Way belongs to a small cluster of galaxies called the local group. - The Andromeda and Milky Way are the largest members of the Local Group The Sun’s neighbors. (Wikipedia)
