Virtual Filesystem Directory Service • Enables the realization of a Grid File System with a uniform, global, hierarchical namespace • Hierarchically organizes file data sources (network file systems accessible through standard protocols such as NFS, CIFS) as well as any abstract data services supporting file access • VFDS can render itself as a data service • Permits distributed namespace ownership within and across organizations without compromising autonomy

Virtual Filesystem Directory Service - Summaries • Enables a virtualized, hierarchical namespace that federates file systems, individual files as well as other abstract data services supporting file access semantics • An informational document was published at GGF8 to facilitate discussions and standardization • A reference implementation is being done at IBM Almaden • Engaging NFSv4 workgroup for possible NFS realization • Data service abstraction of VFDS is being considered
