The Physical and Mental Impact of PE Among Adolescents KalaniHobayan EDSC 304 3/16/09
Students Objectives: Locate information regarding the positive aspects involved within physical education Research information associated with the mental aspects of physical education Understand why these components are essential for promoting lifelong physical education
Student’s Goal: Use 2 of the following websites to find academic research regarding overall aspects associated with the physical and mental aspects of physical education: - pecentral.org -pelinks4u.org -peuniverse.com In addition to these websites, students will need to incorporate two additional academic websites that can also supplement their research
Student’s Goal (Cont.) Students will obtain two key points for each aspect (physical and mental) from each website In total, students should obtain 8 key points that they can present from their internet research. By using the Internet, students will ultimately develop an understanding of not just the importance of lifelong PE but also identify the importance of technology within PE.
Background of Present Day Physical Education In many school districts, PE classes are being dropped due to: Pressure to achieve optimal standards in core classes (reading, language arts, math, science) Emphasis on standardized tests Budget cuts (books, school supplies, etc.)
Background of Present Day PE (Cont.) According to Diane Dunne, “Today only one state in the nation requires daily physical education” (Dunne, 2000). Physical Education: a luxury/necessity Administrators views upon PE Overall results of limited PE
Adolescent’s Biggest Enemy: Obesity “The most common nutritional concern during adolescence is obesity” (Feldman, 2008). Statistics 1 out of 5 adolescents are overweight 1 out of 20 adolescents can be formally classified as obese
Reasons for Obesity Two main factors for obesity levels rising to substantial levels among adolescents are: Lack of physical exercise Limited information regarding health-related issues
PE: Putting the Physical Into Adolescents Ways to Reduce Obesity Among Adolescents include: Active PE classes Insightful knowledge regarding health-related topics Development of lifelong skills and activities
Mental Benefits of PE Among Adolescents Some of the positive mental factors contributed from PE include: Involvement in a physical activity= increases adolescents involvement within school Developing the ability to manage time Allows adolescents to develop a sense of identity
Conclusion “We want kids to be smart academically… well its not showing much intelligence if your going to destroy the body to prepare the mind” (Sweeney, 2002).
