Formative vrsSummativeAssessment • Assessment FOR Learning • Generally low-stakes • To provide feedback to students • Help faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately • Process-based • Assessment OF Learning • Often high-stakes • Evaluation of student learning at a certain point in time • Compared to standards • Product-based
Why is Formative Assessment Important? • Gives point-of-need feedback to students through activities such as • Writing a summary • “Ticket out” • Answers to procedural questions • Observations of student participation in class • Conferences with students • A concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic • Student feedback • Can improve summative assessment!
Why is Summative Assessment Important? • Gives the overall effect or “how much” someone has learned. • Can be used to advocate for • Students • Materials needed • Time needed • Other resources • Examples: • Standardized Tests • Exams • Final Essays • Reports • Papers • End-of-Class-Projects
