Standard #5– Collaborating with TeachersStephen Cary, a second language learner specialist and author of “Working with Second Language Learners: Answers to Teachers Top Ten Questions” claims that “few things are as daunting for our ESL students as an inch-and-a-half thick textbook, designed for native English speakers …”. During a recent summer workshop, Cary emphasized the need for teachers to constantly be thinking about how to make academic texts more comprehensible for our ESL students. We broke into small groups, and as a group came up with some suggestions on how we can impliment the following five recommendations provided by Cary:

We worked together to maximize our responses to help our ESL students best be able to make academic texts more comprehensible. We also discussed how our ESL students need to collaborate with each other for the most effective learning, which is why we agreed that James’ suggestion below is one of the best.
