The Social Learning theory • Social learning is a theory of human development that says humans learn through observation of modeled behavior and reinforcement for imitated behavior. This suggests that environment has a prevailing effect on a person's behavior • Bandura suggested that three factor influenced social learning -> the individual, -> the individual's behavior -> the environment.
‘The Social Learning Theory’ • Albert Bandura Stated that the social learning theory comprises of 4 main components. • -> Attention • -> Retention • -> Motivation • -> Motor Reproduction
The Bobo Doll Experiment • What is the Bobo Doll Experiment? • “...the model pummels [the doll] on the head with a mallet, hurls it down, sits on it and punches it on the nose repeatedly, kicks it across the room, flings it in the air, and bombards it with balls…”(Bandura, 1973: p.72). • Video
The bobo doll experiment • For aggression females imitated the male model more. • For aggression males imitated the male model more. • For non-aggression females imitated the female model more. • For non-aggression males imitated the male model more.
The Bobo doll expiriment • 88% of the children imitated the aggressive behavior. • Eight months later, 40% of the same children reproduce the violent behavior observed in the Bobo doll experiment • Connections to the social learning theory?
Criticism • The study was unethical • Children were trained to be aggressive • Through this experiment children further developed aggression, which left long lasting effects on the growth of these children.

Luke woodham • the case of Luke Woodham and the murders that occurred in Mississippi in October of 1998. • killed his mother, and 2 girls from school. Injuring 7 others. • Was part of ‘Kroth’ which planned on killing many more members of Pearl, Missisippi. • Woodham implied no intention of his mother’s slaughter, and did not present a motive either.
