Trip to Goddard on Friday (a very brief introduction to Project Management)
Statement of Work (SOW) All of us getting to Bldg 2 of the GSFC by 10:30 on Friday Major elements (goals/areas) of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) 1 - Air transportation 2 - Ground transportation 3 - Administrative details …..required for the GSFC
WBS Structure Usual practice is to work through a strict heirarchy, e.g. 1 - Identify every job element you can imagine (j) 2 - Identify the small work package into which it fits (k): k.j 3 - Keep chunking into bigger work packages (l.k.j) until… 4 - Every (j) can be traced to a major WBS goal, e.g., 3.2.3.2 Small Project WBS 1 - Identify every job element you can imagine (J) 2 - Use a graphic representation that can imply heirarchy, causality and time flow: A C B
WBS Elements for Friday’s Trip to Goddard When should each of these WBS be done???
Simplified PERT PERT = Program Evaluation and Review Technique Can accrue/track work already done (like Gantt) Can easily identify short/long term schedule items Identify earliest/latest times for doing each job element “Critical path” is the one with the least amount of slack Key to success is changing schedule to recover slack
