A Little About Us • Tonya Parker • Began teaching career in 1997 • Taught in Jacksonville, Florida, Savannah, Georgia and Raleigh, North Carolina • Taught PreK, Head Start, 1st, 2nd, 4th , and 5thGrade • Received Master’s Degree in Education in 2007 and nominated as Teacher of the Year that same year • Divorced with 3 children and 1 dog who thinks he’s a child!!

A Little About Us Danielle Carpenter Born up north, but I grew up in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina BAE in Early Childhool Education from Coastal Carolina University -Master's Degree in School Counseling from Clemson University This is my 10th year in education and I have taught in North and South Carolina I was a guidance counselor for 3 years and have taught first, second, and third grades I have been married for the past 7 years and we have a 4 year old daughter, Madeline Hobbies include cooking, reading, and traveling...to the beach of course!

Schedule • 8:45-9:15 Breakfast, Morning Work, Pledge, Announcements • 9:20- 11:35 Language Arts –Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop • 11:40 – 12:05 Lunch • 12:05 – 1:40 Math • 1:25 – 1:50 Recess • 1:55 - 2:40 Specials • 2:40 – 2:55 Working snack (unfinished work/read) • 2:55 – 3:30 Social Studies/Science (Mystery Reader on Fridays) • 3:38 - Dismissal begins

5. Standards Based GradingLevel 4 = Extends targeted grade level standards. Requires application and critical thinking.Level 3* = Used only on report card. Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standards with evidence of application over time.Level 3 = Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standards.Level 2= Needs support to meet grade level standards.Level 1 = Insufficient performance of targeted grade level standards.P=Work not assessed. Practice of new skill.

7. Language Arts • Common Core standards • Reader’s Workshop/some Guided Reading (Ability Grouping) • C.A.F.E. and other reading strategies to build stamina and comprehension • Literature Circles (for differentiation and level 4 opportunities)

8. Writing and Spelling • Writer’s Workshop • Writing process • Modeling • Confer with teacher to individualize instruction • Rubrics for scoring • Spelling will be based on individual need. Students were preassessed to determine strengths/weaknesses in spelling patterns

9. Mathematics • Common core standards • Taught using alignment lessons and Expressions • Includes extension lessons for differentiation • Math Club on Fridays - Ability Grouped • Math Talk – completely student led and provides opportunities for students to share various strategies used to problem solve • Vocabulary = major component

Science and Social Studies • Science taught by Ms. Parker (4 ½ weeks per qtr) • 1st Qtr = Weather • 2nd Qtr=Matter • 3rd Qtr= Lifecycles • 4th Qtr= Sound • Social Studies taught by Mrs. Carpenter (4 ½ weeks per qtr) • 2 projects this year (Rubric and detailed instructions will be provided prior to start of project) • Enterprise Day • State project

Flipping the Classroom Students will be able to view videotaped lessons of Carpenter/Parker on weebly prior to the introduction of skill/concept in class Most lessons will be new math concepts but we may decide to “flip” lessons in other areas Advantage = provides students the opportunity to come into class with prior knowledge (gives them a “head start” or “double dose” of the lesson. New/key vocabulary introduced in video.

12. Folders • Monday Folders Graded Work Classwork PTA info/newsletters Other important papers • Unfinished Work Folders • Students will be able to keep track of what they need to complete and turn in • Time throughout day to play “catch up”

13. Homework • Monday – Thursday (activity sheets sent home in clear pocket of agenda) • Students write assignments in agenda but will be posted weekly on weebly for parents to view • Rarely assign homework over weekend (unless remediation practice or major project) • Nightly reading and math • Math books kept at home • Soar sheet for not completing homework; however, parents may send note if student not able to complete homework for valid reason • Remember to record nightly reading in back of agenda

14. Behavior Plan • “Rock Star” of the week • Individual rewards (prize box, homework passes, computer time, lunch with teacher) • Tickets to encourage positive (or if “caught doing something that shows extra special SOAR behavior) • Students made the rules!!! – know what’s expected • Soar sheets for not so good behavior–please sign and return

15. Field Trips • In house “field trips” with High Tech/High Touch • Play • North Carolina Zoo in the spring

17. Conferences • 2 scheduled per year (requirement) usually in Fall and in Spring • Additional if needed by teacher or per parent request • Phone conferences also an option
