DIS10 – closing remarks Aharon Levy for the IAC
Dear Elisabetta, DIS10 is taking place under very unusual conditions. The cancellations of flights caught many people unprepared but quite a few made a heroic effort and arrived to Florence. Unfortunately, close to 150 registered participant did not make it. Nevertheless, by using EVO and skype, you made it possible for the workshop to proceed very smoothly, and almost all talks are being delivered. Furthermore, people who did not make it succeed to participate in the discussions. Though the scientific part is working well, the large number of people who could not attend and have not paid their conference fees has caused serious financial difficulties for the organizers. Requests for refunds from those who have paid and cannot attend further aggravates the situation. It was necessary for you to book rooms, technical infrastructure and food for the planned number of over 300 attendees. It is clear that the costs associated with these bookings cannot be reduced at the last minute. The DIS International Advisory Committee (IAC) discussed these special circumstances and would encourage you to request conference contributions from all those who participated in the meeting, whether in person or not. At this point, we would also suggest that no refunds are made for workshop fees which have already been paid until the financial situation is clarified. This is clearly a delicate matter, but we would request those who registered for the workshop to investigate with their local administrators whether the conference fee could indeed be reimbursed given that the conference has taken place and that they have participated, albeit remotely. We would also encourage you to contact the management of major laboratories and of the other institutions for help in this special situation. We want to congratulate you on hosting what has so far been a very successful meeting under these difficult circumstances. Best regards, Aharon Levy for the IAC
