  2. When do I clarify? When you don’t understand what’s going on When you don’t know a word When you don’t know what something in the text is for, or where it goes

  3. How do I clarify? Use what you already know about the topic (background knowledge-schema) Use what you know from what you’ve already read in the book Read ahead to see if the text helps you better understand Break down words to read them better Use the dictionary or what you read in the sentence to help you figure out the meaning of a word Use the text structure (bold words, highlights, punctuation) See how the picture/charts go with what you already read

  4. How do I clarify the meaning of an unknown word? Look for little words in big words Look for word parts such as bases (roots), prefixes and suffixes Look for commas that follow unfamiliar words. Sometimes when an author uses a word that may be unfamiliar to the reader, they follow it with a comma, give the definition, use another comma and then continue with the sentence. The definition of the word will be between the commas. Keep reading. The word you are stuck on may not be important to the meaning of the sentence, or as you read you will get a general idea of the meaning even though you can’t give a dictionary definition.

He held the thick piece of wood and ran his finger over its shimmering letters: ML. “Master Librarian,” he whispered. Jack couldn’t believe that he and his sister, Annie, were finally Master Librarians.

Just then Annie stuck her head into Jack’s room. “Want to check the woods? She asked. Every morning, they looked in the Frog Creek woods to see if Morgan le Fay and her magic tree house had returned. “We can’t,” said Jack. “We’re leaving soon.”

He threw in his notebook, his pencil, and his secret library card. Then he followed Annie downstairs. “We’ll be back soon!” Annie called. “Don’t go far!” Their dad called. “We’re leaving in 20 minutes.” “Don’t worry, we’ll be back in 10!” said Annie. Right, thought Jack. Five minutes to the woods and five minutes back. Even if Morgan sent them on an adventure, they would return at exactly the same time that they left.

  8. The Magic Tree House: Vacation Under the Volcano “Yay!” said Annie. There it was—the magic tree house. And Morgan le Fay was waving from the window. “Hail, Master Librarians,” she said.
