Program Goals and Objectives The Safer Chemistry Challenge Program (SCCP) is designed to motivate, challenge, assist, and recognize facilities that reduce the use of toxic chemicals of concern to human health and the environment. • 10% by 2015 • 20% by 2020 • 25% by 2025 Baseline year of 2010 www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Core Elements • Toxic chemical reduction focused • Pollution prevention or source reduction reliant • Voluntary, collaborative, and member driven • Recognizes leadership for safer chemistry performance • Reductions must be achievable, measureable, and verifiable www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Benefits of Joining SCCP • Resources • 7 steps to success • Sample action plan • Success story template • Tools to eliminate chemicals of concern at the design stage • GreenScreen • EPA Design for the Environment • Technical assistance program expertise • Recognition – national and state www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Technical Advisory Panel • Roles: Assist in identifying the barriers faced by industry and potential solutions as they transition to safer chemistries • Members: • Barbara Hanley, Hewlett Packard • Gabe Wing, Herman Miller • Roger McFadden, Staples • Teresa McGrath, NSF International • Paul Richard, Babcock Warner Institute • Al Innes, MN Pollution Control Agency www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Benefits of Reducing Chemical Use • Saves money • Material and energy savings • Reduced regulatory costs • Creates market opportunities • Capturing new markets • Developing new products • Improves brand and reputation • Enhances user/consumer safety • Improves worker health • Greater environmental stewardship (Pike Research, 2011) www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Approaches/Strategies • Establish collaboratives between relevant associations, EPA, and NPPR-SCCP • Chemicals of concern products sector associations • Work with supply chains • List of restricted substances for suppliers • Undesirable chemicals in products and transition • Partnering between state green chemistry programs, EPA, and NPPR-SCCP • Focus on geographical regions www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Industry Engagement • Trade and industry associations • Stewardship Action Council (SAC) • Green Chemistry and Commerce Council (GC3) • BizNGO • Council of Great Lakes Industries • State technical assistance programs www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Focus Area: Great Lakes Initiative • Support from EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative over three years • Objective: Advance the adoption of safer chemistries in the manufacture and use of products • Activities: • Deliver six GreenScreen training workshops • May 8, 2012, Ann Arbor • Nov 15, 2012, Chicago • Carry out two green chemistry conferences • Nov 13-14, 2012, Chicago • Webinar series (spring and fall) • Recruit 100 SCCP industry members www.p2.org/category/challenge/
GLRI Partners • Great Lakes Regional P2 Roundtable (GLRPPR) • Clean Production Action (CPA) • Great Lakes Green Chemistry Network • Great Lakes state technical assistance programs (TAPs) • Trade and industry associations www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Community Based Activities • Identify local partners for marketing and promotion • Use of local media • Reach out to TRI companies • Make use of recognition programs • Involve companies in training workshops, webinars, and conferences www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Steps to Participate • Complete application and sign commitment form • Partner with state or local technical assistance program to identify safer alternatives • Develop and implement action plan • Report results to NPPR • Get recognition and communicate achievements www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Alliance Members • Roles: • Market events such as webinars, trainings, and conferences • Promote safer chemistry to local industries • Provide technical assistance where possible • Link SCCP members to local recognition programs • Great Lakes states: IL, IN, MN, MI, WI, OH, NY • CT, KY, NE, NJ www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Fee Structure Individual Facilities • <100 empl: $500 • 101-499 empl: $800 • 500+ empl: $1,500 Multiple Facilities • 2-5 facilities: $2,000 • 6-10 facilities: $3,000 • 11+ facilities: $5,000 No fee for Alliance members or industry in the Great Lakes basin during the GLRI grant www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Member Profile: Gougeon Bros (MI) • Gougeon Brothers manufactures boats aand formulates and sells epoxy products used in their products and for other boatbuilders • Pursuing product design that helps customers reduce or eliminate waste, improve safety, and minimize cost of compliance • Current project to reduce hexavalent chromium in a metal surface preparation product (aids adhesion of the epoxy to a substrate), working with their supply chain to research alternatives www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Member Profile: Washing Systems (OH) • Washing Systems is a formulator of innovative cleaning products for the commercial laundry industry • Work with their customers for more efficient cleaning and reduce chemicals of concern including phosphates, NPE, butyl cellosolve, EDTA, and petroleum based solvents • Worked with one customer, Cintas, and Washington State -- eliminated 25,000 gal of detergent that contained nonlyphenolethoxylate (NPE) in the laundry process www.p2.org/category/challenge/
Member Profile: Naturepedic and Lullaby Earth (OH ) • Naturepedic and Lullaby Earth manufacture mattresses and related accessories without toxic chemicals • Specifically, the company designs and manufacturers its products without the use of polyurethane foam, phthalates, vinyl, brominated or chlorinated fire retardants, perfluorinated compounds, pesticides or antimicrobials, adhesives, synthetic latex rubber • As new product and market opportunities arise, Naturepedic will continue to design and manufacture products without chemicals of concern • Uses precautionary principle to avoid toxic chemicals in favor of materials such as organic cotton, wool, and,and latex www.p2.org/category/challenge/
