  1. Initiation Chapter 7 Lesson 1

  2. What is a sacrament? A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. Grace was lost after the fall of Adam and Eve. Man could not redeem himself (restore grace to himself). The gates of heaven were closed and could only be opened by the death and Resurrection of Christ, who is the perfect sacrifice of atonement. Christ gave the Church and the sacraments as channels of his grace, so that we may participate in the rewards he won for us on the Cross.

  3. Turn to page 43 in your textbook. Read Luke 10:29-37. Who is our neighbor? Man can find his salvation through the Church (represented by the inn). The bishops in union with the Pope continue the work of Christ until he comes again.

  4. Look up the following biblical passages on Baptism. • Jn 3:5 This explains the necessity of rebirth. • Mt 28:18-20 This explains its institution by Christ. • Rom 6:3-11, Gal 2:19-20; 3:14, 26-29; Eph 1:3-5; 2:4-10; Col 1:14, 2:9-13; 3:1-3; 1Pet 1:3-5.

  5. Baptism • Matter: pouring of water three times (or triple immersion) • Form: “I baptize you in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. • Minister: usually a priest or deacon, but in case of an emergency, anyone can baptize.

  6. Effects of Baptism • Washes away sin • Gives grace • Makes us members of the Church • Confers a seal on our soul that says we are promised to follow Christ. This is either promised by our parents and sponsors or by our own selves if we are older.

  7. Baptism of Blood This refers to those who die for the faith without being baptized and are united with Christ by their witness.

  8. Baptism of Desire This refers to the desire of catechumens to be baptized.

  9. Rite of Baptism The minister immerses the candidate in water or pours water on his head three times, while saying: “I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

  10. Symbols • Water: cleanses as we are cleansed from sin. • Chrism: reminds us that we share in the threefold ministry of Christ as priest, prophet, and king. • Candle: we should receive the light of Christ. • White garment: we are pure and clothed in Christ.
