Learn about cancer cell division and its abnormalities. Watch a video and create scientific questions based on what you see. Identify evidence on how cancer cells are different from normal cells. Understand the reasons for normal cell division and compare it to cancer cell division. Draw and describe each phase of the cell cycle in normal cells.

WARM UP – Jan. 7 New Handout = Page 1 objective copy: I can create questions that relate my prior knowledge of cancer to abnormalities in cell division. do now answer: • Do you know anybody who has had, or currently has, cancer? If so, what type(s)? • Create a formal definition for the disease of cancer, based on your prior knowledge.

WARM UP – Jan. 8 New Handout = Page 3 objective copy: I can identify evidence that addresses how cancer cells are different from normal cells. do now answer: • Take out Binder p. 2. If not done with the back side of the page, complete it now. If done with it, move to the next step. • Choose one group member to write your group’s highest priority question on the P.1 Driving Question Board.
WARM UP – Jan. 8 homework -Semester 1 binders: Either store papers at home or leave with Frydman – Do one of these by Friday 1/11 do now - P.1 seats- if you made a request, hang tight 1 more day - Driving Question Board - CER & data sets - objectiveI can create questions that relate my prior knowledge of cancer to abnormalities in cell division.
WARM UP – Jan. 9 objective copy: I can identify the reasons for normal cell division (mitosis), and the specific ways in which cancer cell division is different. do now answer (using p. 3 & data set from yesterday): • If you have not yet finished the ‘Evidence’ portion of your data set, do that now. • With groups, take turns sharing what was on your data set and write the evidence on p. 3 • Once all Evidence is written down, work with groups to create a Claim and Reasoning.
WARM UP – Jan. 9 homework -Semester 1 binders: Either store papers at home or leave with Frydman – Do one of these by Friday 1/11 do now - Warm-up: Finish CER from yesterday - Video: Cell division of normal vs. cancerous cells - Making connections: Normal cell division objectiveI can identify the reasons for normal cell division (mitosis), and the specific ways in which cancer cell division is different.
WARM UP – Jan. 10 objective copy: I can draw and describe each phase of the cell cycle (normal, non-cancerous cells) do now answer: 1. Take out Binder p. 4 and answer Q’s #1-5 (on back of front page)
WARM UP – Jan. 10 homework -Semester 1 binders: Either store papers at home or leave with Frydman – Do one of these by Friday 1/11 agenda- Intro: What is cancer/why do normal cells divide? - Notes: Mitosis & the Cell Cycle -Partners: Mitosis cards objectiveI can draw and describe each phase of the cell cycle (normal, non-cancerous cells)
Say “MY- toe -sis” Mitosis: Making body cells (Somatic Cells) Copy green text onto Page 5!
Chromosome Review… KARYOTYPE: A stained image of someone’s chromosomes, seen through a microscope! In your body cells, you have 46 chromosomes, which is really 23pairs. You have two of every chromosome… Can you guess why you have TWO copies of each?
SOMATIC CELLS(body cells) areDIPLOID(2n)= TWOfull sets of chromosomes
Unfortunately, our body cells do not last forever… • The cell cycle: One cell grows & divides into two new cells that are genetically identical! [Video of Blood Lily Cell]
DNA replicates The Cell Cycle 90% of cell life (growth) (more growth)
WARM UP – Jan. 11 objective copy: I can draw and describe each phase of the cell cycle (normal, non-cancerous cells) do now answer: • X
WARM UP – Jan. 11 homework -Begin reviewing for mitosis quiz – Will be Thurs. 1/17 agenda- Groups: Intro to the cell cycle -Partners: Mitosis cards objectiveI can draw and describe each phase of the cell cycle (normal, non-cancerous cells)
Something that happens step-by-step A process called MITOSISis used to get a diploid cell. • What to write on your handout: • Write the name of the phase (step) on LEFT. • Write the description of what happens then on RIGHT.
Before we begin… • INTERPHASE – DNA replicates! “sister chromatids” chromatid chromatid 2n 4n
A closer look… “sister chromatids” chromatid chromatid 2n Still homologous pairs, there’s just a copy of each now! 4n
Trivia Question What is the largest internal organ in the human body?
Before we begin… • INTERPHASE – DNA replicates! “sister chromatids” chromatid chromatid 2n 4n
A closer look… “sister chromatids” chromatid chromatid 2n Still homologous pairs, there’s just a copy of each now! 4n
1.Prophase • Chromosomes condense & aPpear • Other things going on: • Spindle fibers form between the ends of the cell & nuclear envelope disappears
2.Metaphase • Chromosomes line up in the Middle • Other things going on: • Spindle fibers attach to chromatids, as they prepare to pull them apart
3.Anaphase • Chromatids get pulled Apart to opposite sides of cell
4.Telophase • Two new nuclei form • Other things going on: • Chromosomes become less visible • Mitosis is finished!!
5.Cytokinesis • Cell Cleaves (or Cuts) into 2 identical daughter cells
Mitosis in real life… Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase/Cytokinesis
Estoy haciendo un taco. Paco WOW! We just made 1 cell split into 2… • How will you remember all those phases? • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase • Paco • Made • A • Taco
Cell Divison Reading! • Read Ch. 8-2 (p. 148-151) • Answer Q’s #1-6 on p. 151
WARM UP – Jan. 24 New Handout = Page 12 objective copy: I can visually depict a cell dividing via mitosis. do now answer (complete sentences): • Why do our bodies have 2 sets of each chromosome? • List the TWO major phases of the cell cycle. • During which of the above-listed phases does DNA replication occur? Be as specific as possible.
WARM UP – Jan. 24 homework -Organize binders!!! do now - Reminder: Office Hrs Today!! -See Bio grades on bulletin board before leaving class -Study for quiz makeups/revisions -Take quiz makeups/revisions -SAT PREP TOMORROW!! - Finish Mitosis Notes -Video Review of Cell Cycle -Book Reading: Ch. 8-2
WARM UP – Jan. 25 New Handout = Page 13 objective copy: I can identify cells in the four mitotic stages under a microscope. do now answer: • Describe the meaning of the term ‘diploid’. • What happens in the Telophase stage of mitosis?
WARM UP – Jan. 25 homework -Finish Microscope Lab, Part IV – Due tomorrow, Friday 1/26 -Organize binders!!! do now -Turn in HW -Juniors: SAT Prep Today!! - Mitosis Under the Microscope -Part A (making Cell Cycle Key) -Part B objectiveI can identify cells in the four mitotic stages under a microscope.
How to get microscope in focus • Put your lens on low power (red lens) • Use coarse and fine adjustments to get colored cell cluster in view • Move to medium power • Use coarse/fine adjustment to get cell cluster in view • Move to high power • Use coarse/fine adjustment to get cell cluster in view
Once in high power… • Try to find a SINGLE cell in interphase (DNA will not be very clear- it will be lightly stained, as opposed to some dark stains you see in other cells) • Line up that cell along the black pointer in your eyepiece so your partner can see it • In the box provided, sketch what that cell looks like • Do the same for the mitotic stages- these chromosomes will have a dark stain. Look for a pattern!
