  2. What is Osteopathic Medicine • Developed 130 years ago by physician A.T. Still • D.O.s, apply the philosophy of treating the whole person to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, disease and injury. • Strong emphasis on: the inter-relationship of the body's nerves, muscles, bones and organs • Osteopathic medicine is the fastest growing healthcare profession

  3. D.O.s and M.D.s are alike in many ways: Both D.O.s and M.D.s complete four years of basic medical education. After medical school, both D.O.s and M.D.s obtain graduate medical education through such programs as internships and residencies. Both D.O.s and M.D.s can choose to practice in any specialty area of medicine-such as pediatrics, family practice, psychiatry, surgery or obstetrics. D.O.s and M.D.s must pass comparable examinations to obtain state licenses. D.O.s and M.D.s both practice in fully accredited and licensed health care facilities.

Serving the Community Approximately 65% of practicing osteopathic physicians specialize in primary care areas, such as pediatrics, family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, and internal medicine. Many D.O.s fill a critical need for physicians by practicing in rural and other medically underserved communities.

Mission Statement • Promote the advancement of osteopathic education • Provide education to qualified students to become osteopathic physicians. • Provide health education and disease prevention for total patient care. • Use modern and future developing technologies in the making of medical decisions.

  10. Why Wisconsin • Currently Wisconsin does not have an osteopathic school • There are enough osteopathic physicians, hospitals, and resources to support an osteopathic school • Wisconsin as a whole would benefit with another medical college • Improve the general healthcare
