Congress Information • PAPA was established fifteen years ago. • It is a section of the Philippine Pediatric Association (PPA) and consists of about 500 members mainly of pediatricians, child health workers and family physicians all dedicated to ambulatory pediatrics. • Main activities of PAPA consist of immunization, parenting, child nutrition, developmental surveillance, mental health, childhood tuberculosis and child protection • This is also the First Joint Meeting between PAPA and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) • Theme for the Conference is on “Global Health Issues Affecting the Filipino Children: Physicians as Public Health Advocates” Report on the PAPA/AAP Meeting in Manila
PAPA/AAP Participation • PAPA was represented by the current President (Benjamin J Sablan), Founding President (Mutya San Agustin ) and all Past Presidents plus more than three hundred members • AAP was well represented by Judith Palfrey (President) and Jonathan Klein (Deputy ED • There were good collaborative activities in terms of scientific projects and academic activities. IPA Participation • I was invited as President of IPA • I paid my own airfares out of my airline mileage and the organizers financed my hotel accommodation expenses. • I visited the Philippines General Hospital (PGH) and the famous Child Protection Unit (CPU) established 10 years ago for prevention of child abuse • I delivered altogether three talks. I brought good will of IPA, updated our activities and promoted our Johannesburg Congress 2010 Report on the PAPA/AAP Meeting in Manila
Talks delivered by Chok Wan at the Meeting • “Importance of Ambulatory Paediatics; The IPA Perspectives” at the Philippine General Hospital focusing on the international initiatives from IPA and WHO • “Roles of Ambulatory Pediatrics, Advocacy and Professional Partnership in Global Child Health” at the Opening Ceremony • “Coalition Building and Advocacy for Comprehensive Tobacco Control” at the Workshop for Tobacco Control stressing on indications, modes, strategic actions and outcome deliverables for alliance building Report on the PAPA/AAP Meeting in Manila
Business Meeting Between IPA, PAPA and AAP with the WHO WPRO Office on Tobacco Control within the Region • A luncheon business meeting was hosted between the aforesaid organizations with Dr. Susan P Mercado (Regional Advisor, Tobacco Free Initiatives, WHO WPRO Office) on strategic plans for tobacco control within the Region • All agreed that PAPA is an ideal coordinator for formation of a Coalition on Tobacco Control within Philippines • Reference can be taken from Hong Kong and Singapore based on their good work on the issue • A workshop on Tobacco Control will be included in APPA in 2010 during the IPA/APPA Conference on Child and Environmental Health in China Report on the PAPA/AAP Meeting in Manila
Message Back to IPA • Member societies treasure sharing their important dates and events with IPA • IPA members have good respect on IPA • Well organized Congress with good scientific papers • Importance of Ambulatory Pediatrics as most cost-effective subspecialty in promoting Child Health was stressed time and again during the Conference. • Evidence-based practice and ethics affirmed as foundation for advocacy work for children • Philippines Pediatric Association and PAPA will send a big delegation to our IPA Congress 2010 with good papers consisting on childhood tobacco, disaster preparedness, childhood immunization and others Report on the PAPA/AAP Meeting in Manila
