College and Career Readiness • We are defining college ready as being prepared for the academic challenge of any further education or training experience beyond high school without the need for remedial assistance. • We are defining career ready as possessing the habits and skills which are most desired by employers, including proficiency in teamwork, communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Comparison between grade level and CCR • Why is my child selected for enhancement class: • When they are receiving passing grades? • When they are meeting on ISAT?
Objective & Conclusion • Objective: To ensure that all students will be prepared with the prerequisite knowledge they need in order to be successful in high school and beyond. • Conclusion: • Core curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices need to be strengthened (ongoing). • A targeted intervention solution is needed to support core instruction and address areas in need of improvement (gradually reduced).
What is Enhancement? • Additional instructional support in reading and/or math above and beyond a students language arts and math class. • Builds students foundational skills and provides an individualized learning path for each student.
How Does It Work? • Students will be using a program from Compass Learning called Odyssey. • Student data is gathered via the MAP test and creates an individualized learning path for every student in Odyssey. • The Odyssey program tracks students progress through their learning path and provides information to support teacher led group instruction.
5 day Enhancement Class • Below 25th percentile in one subject (reading/math) and below 50th percentile in another subject (reading/math). • Students will receive five 44 minute periods of Enhancement Class per week
3 day Enhancement Class • Below 50th percentile in both reading and math but above the 24th percentile. • Students will receive three 44 minute periods of Enhancement Class per week
2 day Enhancement Class • Below 50th percentile in one subject (reading or math) • Students will receive two 44 minute periods of Enhancement Class per week
Important Points • The majority of all middle school students will be using the Odyssey program to further develop skills • In addition to regular monitoring of progress, evaluation will be completed on a bi-annual basis • As progress is made, a reduction in the level of support will be evaluated based upon your child’s strengths and gains throughout the year • Benchmarks are set for each grade level-based on percentile, grade in course, and teacher rec., students may have a reduced level of support (i.e. fewer days) or exit the enhancement class and only use at home or before/after school. • As students progress through their learning path, the program adapts to continually challenge students to more complex skills/knowledge
Long Term Goal • All students have access to the Odyssey program to further their college and career readiness skills • All students are prepared for rigorous coursework at the high school level when they leave middle school • All students are college and career ready when they exit high school
