MOTION TRANSFORMATION • Motion transmission systems transmit motion without changing the motion itself (rotation to rotation etc....) • Motion transformation, on the other hand is the mechanical function of relaying a motion from one part to another while altering the nature of the motion • Like motion transmission, there are 5 common motion transformation systems
MOTION TRANSFORMATION • 1) Rack and Pinion Systems • Transforms rotation to translation or translation to rotation • Is reversible • This system contains at least one gear (pinion) and one rack (straight bar with teeth)
MOTION TRANSFORMATION • Rack and pinion systems are used as steering mechanisms on vehicles
MOTION TRANSFORMATION • Screw and Gear systems (type 1) • Transforms rotation into translation • It is not reversible • In this type, the screw is the driver • Its rotation causes the nut to move translationally
MOTION TRANSFORMATION • Screw and Gear Systems (Type 2) • Transforms rotation into translation also • Is not reversible • In this type, the nut is the driver • Its rotation causes the screw to move translationally
MOTION TRANSFORMATION • Cam and follower Systems • Transforms rotation in to translation • Is not reversible • Rotational motion of the cam causes the follower to move in a translation plane of motion (back and forth or up and down) • The shape of the cam determines how the follower will move • A spring is often used to keep the follower in contact with the cam
MOTION TRANSFORMATION • Sometimes cams that have an off-center axis of rotation are used – these are called eccentrics
MOTION TRANSFORMATION • Slider – Crank mechanisms • Perform rotation in to translation or translation in to rotation • They are reversible • This motion transformation system is used in internal combustion engines to transform the translation motion of the pistons in to rotation motion of the crank which cause the wheels to turn
