  1. The Scientific Method RETELL Capstone ProjectDecember 7, 2013 Katie Bryant - 8th Grade Science Mike Cuccia - Biology Roxanne Campbell – 7th Grade Science

  2. The Scientific MethodThe Lessons • Vocabulary – What is the Scientific Method? 2. Listening/Speaking – Understanding the parts of the Scientific Method 3. Reading– SM and the Slinky Drop Problem 4. Writing – Making Conclusions Make Sense

  3. The Scientific MethodMA State Frameworks Scientific Inquiry Skills: Standard SIS1 - Make observations, raise questions, and formulate hypotheses Standard SIS2 - Design and conduct scientific investigations Standard SIS3 - Analyze and interpret results of scientific investigations Standard SIS4 - Communicate and apply the results of scientific investigations.

  4. The Scientific MethodTarget Vocabulary

  5. The Scientific Method Vocabulary: What is the Scientific Method? * Content Objective SWBAT develop scientific thinking.  They will learn how to practice scientific method process skills, critical thinking skills, and skills that will support scientific inquiry. *Language Objectives Differentiation: Level 1/2 1.Students will match content related vocabulary to pictures of the objects. 2. Students will create vocabulary cards. Level 3/4 1. Students will use learning strategies to identify vocabulary orally. 2. Students will identify any multiple meanings of the vocabulary. * Language Objectives 1. SWBAT use general and high frequency vocabulary in relation to the scientific method. 2. SWBAT orally demonstrate their understanding of the vocabulary. SWBAT write examples of all tiers of the vocabulary.

  6. The Scientific Method Vocabulary: What is the Scientific Method? Lesson Sequence 1. Do Now – Prior Knowledge Assessment (5 min) 2. Vocabulary Development (15 min) • Seven Step Process for Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (25 min) 4. Ready, Set, Go Activity (10 min.) 5. Wrap Up and Exit Slip (5 min.)

  7. The Scientific Method Listening/Speaking: Parts of the Scientific Method * Content Objective 1. SWBAT describe the steps of the Scientific Method. 2. SWBAT use the steps of the Scientific Method to answer a question or solve a problem. • *Language Objectives Differentiation: • Level 1/2 • 1. SWBAT repeat the main idea with proper intonation and expression after hearing it stated. • 2. SWBAT listen to information from a partner and repeat the words that the partner has said including target vocabulary • Level 3/4 • 1. SWBAT state the main idea using target content vocabulary from a list. • 2. SWBAT restate their partner’s information using target vocabulary and paraphrasing language • * Language Objectives • 1. SWBAT articulate main ideas using target content vocabulary. • 2. SWBAT listen to information from a partner, then verbally summarize the main ideas back to the partner.

  8. The Scientific Method Listening/Speaking: Parts of the Scientific Method Lesson Sequence 1. Do Now- Partner Reading (15 min.) 2. Whole Group Content Discussion (15 min.) • Pair Summarizer Activity (15 min.) 4. Step and Slide Activity (15 min.) 5. Wrap Up and Exit Slip (5 min.)

  9. The Scientific Method Reading: The Slinky Problem * Content Objective 1. SWBAT read and understand the steps of the scientific method. 2. SWBAT interpret the meaning of illustrations and data tables in the mentor text and teacher supplied materials. 3. SWBAT apply the concept of the scientific method to the “Slinky Drop” problem and identify the steps taken to solve the problem. * Language Objectives 1. Reading: Be able to read and understand the key concepts of the Scientific Method. 2. Writing: Be able to summarize the reading passage from the text and teacher materials. 3. Listening: Be able to understand and explain the scientific method from the reading. 4. Speaking: Be able to articulate the significance of the scientific method and the steps. *Language Objectives Differentiation: Level 1/2 Students will be supported with the use of graphic outlines of the Scientific Method (without labels) for use in reading and writing their assignments for this lesson. They will read and receive support on a sentence by sentence basis a. They will focus on Tier 1 -2 words and use bullet format. Level 3-4:Students will be using more Tier 3 words and construct more complex sentences using them. They will construct complete sentences rather than bullets and incorporate a greater level of integration with the content.

  10. The Scientific Method Reading: The Slinky Problem Lesson Sequence 1. Do Now – Slinky Drop Introduction (10 min) 2. Review SM Concepts/Steps (10 min) • Partner Read (25 min) 4. Analyze Slinky Drop Experiment (10 min.) 5. Wrap Up and Summary (5 min.)

  11. The Scientific Method Writing: Creating Conclusions * Content Objectives 1. SWBAT describe the steps of the Scientific Method. 2. SWBAT use the steps of the Scientific Method to answer a question or solve a problem. *Language Objectives Differentiation: Level 1/2 1.Students will match content related vocabulary to pictures of the objects. 2. Students will create vocabulary cards. Level 3/4 1. Students will use learning strategies to identify vocabulary orally. 2.
