Early Life • Born December 23, 1867 in Delta, Louisiana. • Both her parents died of Yellow Fever Epidemic in 1874. • She had 1 daughter Lelia born June 6, 1885. • She married Moses Jeff Mc Williams in 1881. • Moses died in 1887 from a race riot. • Yellow Fever returned leaving her sister, Lelia, and herself out of work. She suffered from Alopecia.
Later Life • Madame C.J. Walker died at the age of 51 of a kidney failure result • Left 2/3 of her estate to charities and schools. Before dying she couldcount over 2,000 agents selling her products.

Recognition • A museum was created by her . • The museum was Fredrick Douglas’s house . • She was the first self made, African- American millionaire. • Many beauty schools were created because of her.
Hardships • She was born after the Civil war • She was orphaned at age 7 • She was abused by her brother-in-law • She was widowed in 1887 • She began to lose her hair in the 1890’s • She had limited education due to gangs and lack of extra time • When she was little she got no presents for holidays because there wasn’t enough money MADAME C.J.WALKER
Education • She had limited formal education. • When possible she went to night schools. • Her employees looked up unfamiliar words for her. • Lelia helped her familiarize herself with vocabulary.
