What is a timeline? • Go to http://researchguides.uvm.edu/timelineworkshop • As you look at an example, consider these questions: • What draws you into the timeline? or not? • How do you navigate through the timeline? • Date structure: how exact are the dates (year, month, day, time)? • Number of images: are there multiple images for each time spot? • Are their thumbnails for images in the time markers? • How is crowding/overlapping handled? Can you zoom in and out? Bonus questions that require a visit to the app’s site: • Where is the information stored? • Can you extract it for back-up or later use in another app? Digital Scholars Lab

The Timeline Apps We’ve Seen Today • TimelineJS - uses your own Google spreadsheet. • TimeGlider - expands and contracts; images on timeline • BeeDocs Timeline - 3D movies • Neatline - used in conjunction with Omeka • Sutori - a timeline-like storytelling app • MyHistro - timeline with georeferencing and social media Digital Scholars Lab

Let’s try it • We will build a spreadsheet-based TimelineJS timeline. • Go to: http://tinyurl.com/jg8rk9k • Note the type of information you will need to collect: • Date • Headline (title) • Text (description) • URL • Media link, • Media credit, • Media caption • Add rows as needed but do not delete the top (header) row.
