  1. Railroad Fire Investigation

  2. Course Description This course will provide the Level 3 Wildland Fire Investigator (WFI3) with an understanding of the specific causes of railroad related wildfires. Detailed sections will provide specialized information and techniques to aid in the investigation of railroad related wildfires.

  3. Course Objectives • The student will be able to describe the railroad industry organization structure. • The student will be able to describe how to safely work on and around locomotives and rail cars during fire investigations. • The student will be able to recognize locomotive manufacturers and models. • The student will describe maintenance procedures used to prevent wildfire starts from railroad equipment. • The student will be able to recognize the various railroad fire causes and evidence associated with these causes.

Student Performance Objectives • Recognize why safety in railroad fire investigation is the number one priority. • Describe a railroad’s organizational structure. • Describe the different types of locomotive exhaust systems and how they may be involved in wildland fire ignitions. • Describe steam locomotive systems and their potential for wildland fire ignitions.

  5. Student Performance Objectives • Describe the different types of railroad equipment brake systems and how they may be involved in wildland fire ignitions. • Identify the various operations associated with railroad right-of-way maintenance and their potential for wildland fire ignitions. • List the types of records available for a railroad related wildfire investigation. • Identify the steps involved in preparing a railroad fire investigation case report.
