  1. How to find a thesis topic? • It is important that you choose the right topic. • Once you have chosen a topic, there is no going back, even if you can modify your topic, you cannot drop it.

  2. You can find a topic in several ways • What are you capable of doing well? • What are your strengths and weaknesses? • Making a list of your skills and knowledge is a good starting point. • What subjects have you studied? • Which subjects did you like?

  3. Knowledge gained through work experience is also relevant. • What knowledge and skills do you think you might need in the future (to get work and in your work)?

  4. There are a lot of theses in the university library. It is useful to look at these for two reasons: • 1. They may give you an idea for a topic. • 2. They show the structure of a thesis, and how a topic is dealt with. • You can write on the same topic, or on a slightly different topic. • The theses often contain suggestions for further research. Those suggestions may be a good place to find a topic.

  5. Do not try to use a project you have already handed in. Enlarging a short project into a thesis is difficult. Some parts will be too small, others the wrong shape, etc. • It is best to start with a fresh topic!

  6. Ways to find a topic: • Looking at old theses • Brainstorming • Discussing with someone in your workplace. The firm may need someone to investigate something. • Look at your textbooks. • Discussing with other students or friends • Thinking

  7. Narrowing down your topic • Start by outlining the field; for instance consumer behaviour. • Narrow this down to the buyer behaviour of students • Narow this down to how students choose what food to eat. • Narrow this down to what and where they eat on weekends and during holidays.

  8. How do I know that I have a good research topic? • Are you interested in the topic? • Do you have the right knowledge and skills to do the research? • Do you have access to the right people to survey or interview? • Do you know how much time the research project is going to take? Do you have the required time? • Is there a clear link to the literature on the subject? • Do others understand well what my topic is?

  9. Stick to your topic!
