The Preface Artist v. critic Moral v. immoral Realism v. Romanticism Surface v. symbolism
Caliban Character in Willam Shakespeare’s The Tempest Depicted as wild, deformed, beastly, part devil Represents (acc. to W.S.) the wild, uncontrolled forces of nature
Romanticism • Examination of inner feelings, emotions, and use of imagination. • Mysterious, strange, and fantastic aspects of the human experience • Intense reverence for nature • Concern with the experience of the individual over the universal
Realism • Interested in reaction, logic, and scientific observation • No characters that overcome the insurmountable to be heroes and save the day
What it means… Dislike of realism b/c it shows humanity’s flawed nature Dislike of romanticism b/c it ignores humanity’s flawed nature
Why do we have art? • The morality of art is not the material, but how well that material is used. • Think: Project Runway • Art mirrors the spectator • What do you make of the last line?
Purpose of the Preface • Two-fold purpose: • Book about a painting • Writing is, in itself, an art form
Homework: • Read Ch. 1-4 • TPODG study questions are shared on AMDG • How does the concept of the artist portrayed in the preface play out in the first few chapters? How is it contradicted?
