  1. THE DOWRY-BOX: Idea, Concept, Actors, Background, Summer of 2013, Organizer.

  2. THE IDEA The idea of this genuine project comes from the intersection of two essential factors: The need for the Transylvanian bio-environment to be more than only either a simple bio-business or a mere social-based project in order to help the poorest in the Communityand… The long-lasting life experience of Ioana JOCA, the project manager: after over 10 years of experience on the art & culture international market and after having travelled to over 30 countries on 3 continents, IOANA has decided that Transylvania must be the final destination for those volunteers interested in bio-diversity, cultural tourism and a little bit of local mysticism.

  3. THE CONCEPT According to the Romanian folk tradition, when a girl is about to be married, she receives from her parents a dowry-box. In this box she will have the most precious and necessary items she needs to start a new home, like: bed spreads, carpets, towers, decorative objects. All these items would be made by the bride-to-be and would not only reflect her social status, but also her abilities and skills in and around the household. The project carries the name “The dowry-box” as a metaphor for all those participants that are mainly women up to their ‘30s. Their participation in this project not only will teach them how to reunite with Nature and learn the ways of traditional living in the authentic Transylvania but will also offer them something precious that the Western Europe lost in the 21st century: an adoptive grandmother who can teach them how to (for instance) work with wool, wood, use the healing powers of the plants, cook the best pies, understand the power of a local legend or, simply, share with them a lifetime experience in the middle of the Transylvanian Carpathians.

  4. THE ACTORS The magic of Transylvanian Community is not given only by the breath-taking landscapes, but also by its people. The authenticity of these people comes from their stubbornness and will to follow the old (traditional) ways of living. Unfortunately, many younger people have chosen to leave the villages and work in the cities, and even abroad. The older populate the rural areas and maintain a lifestyle that is unique not only for the Eastern part of Europe, but for the continent itself. From these older people, the female-peasants are the only ones still able to teach the younger generation the true, non-kitsch way of living in perfect balance with Nature, as we know it before the violent technological era. Their heritage cannot be measured into money or other material goods. These “Mothers of the Earth” are willing to pass on their knowledge to whoever wants to stop, listen and breath in the Transylvanian heart and spirit. As a symbolic demonstration, they will each (at the end of the project) “adopt” a young participant as their “grandmother from Transylvania”– as they will keep in touch with the volunteers & hope to see them again. And again 

  5. THE PROJECT’S BACKGROUND Believe it or not, but it all started with a tiny budget of EUR 1000 and only 2 people– Ioana JOCA and Pablo LAMOSA (right picture). In the Summer of 2012, the NGO “JJ Films & Culture” managed to digitalize the Community of Posaga (situated in the heart of the Transylvanian mountains) by creating 17 movie clips and an endless picture gallery with the best of the Community: old traditions (including forgotten crafts and skills), genuine peasants ( from which some are over 90 years old and can tell stories about the 2 World Wars), breath-taking places, unique stories. Started as a pilot-project meant to help the Community of Posaga preserve and disseminate its authentic values, the project extended itself to a pan-national one when Ioana JOCA has realized that young people from all around the world want to spend time in the middle of this Community that has so much to offer, and cannot wait to receive new guests. 7. ABOUT JJ FILMS & CULTURE The NGO “JJ Films & Culture” was founded in Romania in 2010. Its debut project called “Romanian Film Days in Santiago de Chile”had no precedent and, for 7 days, the Chileans could enjoy Romania’s best films (both docs & fiction). The next projects were focused on EVS (European Voluntary Service). In 2011, “JJ Films & Culture” managed to both send & receive volunteers, as well as offer counseling for those young Romanians who intended to become in’tl volunteers. Starting with 2012, “JJ Films & Culture” has shifted its attention towards projects involving BIO-diversity through preservation of nature, traditions and customs in Transylvania. Its pilot-project “POSAGA: the authentic Transylvanian village Community” received a quite high feedback in the Internet. Therefore, the NGO decided to continue supporting Posaga-Community by launching this Summer’s project (here included) i.e. “The dowry-box”.
