The AIFM at a glance Established in 1996 from «Forêt Méditerranéenne»’s initiative and support from personalities and institutions International Administrative Board from the Mediterranean Rim (Spain, Italy, Morroco, Tunisia, Croatia, Turkey, France, Portugal) Executive Secretary located in Marseille, France Funded mainly by EU and France but not only Association Internationale Forêts Méditerranéenne

  3. AIFM’s Objectives Facilitate dialogue between all forest-concerned stakeholders Promote international collaborations Contribute to better consideration of Mediterranean woodlands in knowledge, regulations and practices on different levels

  7. A network of pilot sites • Generated from previous cooperation projects • Protected areas (Parks, Natura 2000 sites, reserves…)

Common problematics of wooded areas • Multiple social, economic and ecologic fonctions and uses • Multiple stakeholders involved and concerned • Multiple stakes and issues • Territorial cohesion and development (economic opportunities in rural areas) • Quality environment • Forest fire combat and prevention • Biodiversity and ecosystem preservation • Climate change combat, mitigation and adaptation Conflicts, misunderstandings about forest planification and management

Objectives and activities • Improving the mechanisms of collaborations with good mixing of concerned levels and disciplines • Increasing dialogue between urban areas and rural territories • Improving the quality of woodland management • Upscaling good practices for Mediterranean region based on concrete projects • How to achieve them ? • Role of the AIFM • Pilot actions to develop and share governance tools (methodology) • Participative studies for sustainable management of protected areas • Integration of different-sensitivities stakeholders from diagnosis to decision-making and management implementation • Regional seminars to share and capitalise • Assessment: Peer reviewing to endorse results for larger Med territories

Expected products and Synergies • Publications: booklets, capitalisation pack including recommendations for transfer and good practices • Links with: • Other projects (joint-network activities) • Med Model Forest Network • EU Commissions • Mediterranean network (AIFM) • Benefit the WG3 and other initiatives from our experiences (bottom-up, capitalisation, communication) and complementary approach

The Mediterranean: specific needs • The Mediterranean area is unique: climate, ecology, history... • Completely neglected in global negociations and events : WFC... • Environmental interventions and silviculture: still oppositions • Local authorities: a primordial role in sustainable development and planification • A model for other regions: metropolisation, rural exodus, tourism, biodiversity evolution, climate change... Need of meeting all initiatives to design and highlight a commonly-shared statement of the Mediterranean To different levels: regional, national, european, Mediterranean and international ! All different sensitivities-stakeholders: knowledge, education, management, protection, promotion, uses

The Mediterranean: specific needs Synergies initiatives: Advocating groups of EU Parliament Members and Regions 1st Mediterranean Congress of woodlands and natural areas Establishment of a thinking and organisation committee including: • International bodies: FAO, UNESCO, PNUE/MAP, UN Conventions, IUFRO, IUCN... • Mediterranean: UfM, AIFM, MMFN, EFIMED, ArcMed... • European: EU, EEB, EFI... • National • Regional and Local: CMPR, Nuts II to IV authorities... • And NGOs and general public !
