  1. Counting and Classifying NADP Publications Susan Braxton, Head Librarian Prairie Research Institute Christopher Lehmann, NADP NADP Ecological Response and Outreach Subcommittee Interim Subcommittee Meeting April 2012

  2. Purpose of Study • Develop algorithm to “easily” count citations of NADP data products in the peer-reviewed literature • Can we classify citations by type? • How have publication counts changed over the history of the program? • How do publication counts and classification types change with significant events? (e.g., new legislation, and/or historic events)

  3. Round 1 Search: Scopus

  4. Seeking the perfect search term… ((ALL("National Atmospheric Deposition" OR NADP) AND ALL(pollut* OR deposition OR rain* OR snow* OR fog) AND NOT TITLE-ABS-KEY(NADPH OR "NADP(H)" OR TCA OR Cyto* OR GADPH OR metabol* OR NADP-* OR nucleotide OR DNA* OR apop* OR transcript* OR catalas* OR receptor* OR RNA*)))

  5. Round 1 Search: Scopus

  6. Papers by Type Round 1 Search: Scopus

  7. Round 2 Search: Zotero

  8. Round 2 Search: Zotero

  9. Round 3 Search?

  10. Future Work • Find method to export citations to data management software (e.g., RefWorks) for further analysis • Mine citation data to evaluate trends in publications over time (e.g., Journal Impact Factor) • Determine means on how NADP data are cited • Cited in bibliographies, only referred to within the text only, only in acknowledgements • Seek to increase “full and proper attribution for datasets” in bibliographies?

  11. Where to go from here… • Write methods/results up in peer-reviewed publication? • Present poster at Fall NADP Meeting? • Comments/suggestions?
