  1. John T. Herrera: Welding Torch Tip Inventor& His Memorabilia By Heinz Davila SED 511 Professor Nava M 6pm-9:45pm

  2. John T. HerreraPatent # 4,013,227 March 22, 1977Welding Torch Tip • Invented a welding torch tip that is used in welding ferrous metals with MAPP gas. The torch tip that he invented has a chamber that allows oxygen and MAPP gas to mix safely and be more efficient. • Prior to Herrera’s invention, welding was done with other gasses that were not as fast and efficient as MAPP Gas. Herrera played a big roll on improving the welding industry.

  3. MAPP Gas • MAPP Gas is a liquefied petroleum gas mixed with methyl acetylene propadiene. • The gas is more efficient because of its high combustion able temperature and its welding abilities with certain metals.

  4. Diagram of a Welding Torch System

  5. Welding Torch Tip MAPP Gas Cylinders

  6. Famous Inventors and TheirMemorabilia Stamps Thomas Alva Edison: Invented the automatic telegraph system. Richard Buckminster Fuller: Invented and designed the best known geodesic dome.

  7. Specific Objective: • The students will be able to identify John T Herrera and his invention of the welding torch tip. • The students will be able to identify other famous inventors who have had memorabilia stamps in their honor. • The students will be able to design a replica stamp of John T. Herrera and his invention out of 11” by 14” poster board using different mediums. • The students will be able to apply the elements and principles of design and various California Art Standards.

  8. Value/Transition: • The students will learn about a minority inventor who impacted the welding community in today’s modern industrial world. • The students will be motivated to reach for their goals in today’s high competitive world. The students will view John T. Herrera as an example. • The students will have a chance to create a memorabilia of an inventor who hasn’t been acknowledged.

  9. Initial Instructions/Materials: • The lesson plan will start out with a short lecture on who John T. Herrera and how his invention has impacted the welding community. • The students will then be shown a short video on the welding industry and the profession. • Finally the class will be shown slides of previous inventors and how they’ve been remembered through their stamps.

  10. Guided Group Practice: • The first group practice will start out with the students creating eight to ten thumb sketches that are 3” by 3” in newsprint paper of their stamp. The thumbnails should include either Mr. Herrera, his invention, or both in the sketches. They will replicate the previous slides they saw about stamps. • The students will then display their work in front of the class and chose which thumb sketch would lead to the final product.

  11. Independent Practice: Individual differences: • The students will now individually create the final stamp out of 11” by 14” poster board. The design should include similarities to stamps that they viewed in the previous slides. • The students will also take into consideration during their creation the elements and principles of design. • Remedial: The students will receive a handout with easier to follow instructions on their project. They can also put together a collage stamp out of magazine cutouts. • Enrichment: For those students who need to be challenged, they can create life size stamps to put together a booklet of stamps.

  12. Evaluation: • The children will be evaluated on how well they followed directions on their final product. • The students will be evaluated on how well they displayed the principles and elements of design on their products. • During the independent practice I will walk around and evaluate the process of the student.

  13. Michael K. Tanaka Patent # 5,678,694 October 21, 1997 Food and Beverage Tray • Invented a food and beverage tray that includes a food section and a beverage section that holds the drink with one finger while the rest of the hand holds the tray. • Xavier Davila • Patent # 4,602,191 July 22, 1986 • Jacket with Programmable Lights • Invented a jacket with programmable LED lights which are connected to a flexible circuit board in the coat.
