Roots of Innovation: A New Interdisciplinary Health Studies Degree at Dalhousie Paula Cameron, PhD Health Promotion, School of Health and Human Performance Katherine Harman, PhD School of Physiotherapy • CONTEXT • Shift toward health promotion/ prevention, interprofessional and interdisciplinary learning • Growing demand for holistic health studies as preparation for health professions and medicine • Changing job markets (e.g., professional mobility, changing scope of practice) • Renewed commitment to innovative Undergraduate Education at Dalhousie and across Canada • Every Faculty at Dalhousie teaches and conducts research in health; rich opportunities for collaboration • CURRICULUM - GUIDING PRINCIPLES • Rich, interdisciplinary scope nests health In historical, cultural, social, political, spiritual and professional contexts • Emphasis on equity and social determinants of health • Local/global citizenship • Academic, community, health system partnerships Communication skills Global awareness Ethics and empathy Critical thinking • PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES • Integrated,experiential and case-based learning • Innovative structure • Rigorous, outcomes-based, rooted in real world issues • Collaboration across disciplines, programs, universities, health sectors Collaboration HISTORY OF A VISION 2000 Deborah Tamlyn (Nursing) developed a proposal for a Health Studies degree 2008-2010 Katherine Harman (Physiotherapy) as Assistant Dean developed proposal for Health Studies degree and school 2012 Paula Cameron (Health and Human Performance) is managing the development of a new IDHS degree program to be submitted in Fall 2013.
