Active voice In most English sentences with an action verb, the subject performs the action denoted by the verb. These examples show that the subject is doing the verb's action.
Passive voice The subject is no longer active, but is, instead, being acted upon by the verb. Note the first two examples how the subject-verb relationship has changed.
Passive Voice Change active sentences (those with a direct object) to passive voice Look at the last example: NOTE:Colorful parrots live in the rainforests cannot be changed to passive voice because the sentence does not have a direct object.
Recapitulation: To change a sentence from active to passive voice, do the following: 1. Move the direct object (in active sentence) into the subjectslot(in passive sentence). 2. Place the active sentence's subject into a phrase beginning with the preposition‘by’. 3. Change the form of the main verb. Active: Marilyn mailed the letter. Passive: The letter was mailed by Marilyn.
From Passive Voice to Active Voice
Recapitulation: To change a passive voice sentence into an active voice sentence: 1. Move the subject (in passive sentence) into the direct object slot (in active sentence). 2. Change the form of the main verb. 3. Place the object (in passive sentence) into the subject slot (in active sentence). Passive: The letter was mailed by Marilyn. Active: Marilyn mailed the letter.
The passive voice may be a better choice in writing when: • the doer of the action is unknown, unwanted, or unneeded in the sentence • the writer wishes to emphasize the action of the sentence rather than the doer of the action • the writer wishes to use passive voice for sentence variety.
