A BRIEF HISTORY • Diversity Program Plan developed by Division Director Benson and approved by Director Shank in September 2000 • Program Plan had three main Activity Elements in FY 2001— Attract under-represented minority students to careers in Earth Science disciplines. — Publicize job opportunities at LBNL/ESD.— Nurture a diversity culture in ESD.

ACTIVITY AREA 1: Attract/Retain Minorities and Women to Careers in Earth Sciences • Brought 3 minority U/G to LBNL summer 2001 via DOE/FE Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program— All plan to pursue advanced degrees, one at UCB. — One was hired by EETD, another has been offered a FY 2002 summer job.— All gave DOE rave reports about LBNL. • Created the new job classification of “Post Baccalaureate Fellowship” to improve career opportunities in Earth Sciences for women and minorities FY 2001 Accomplishments

  4. ACTIVITY AREA 1: Attract/Retain Minorities and Women to Careers in Earth Sciences (cont.) • Continue participation in the MLEF Program • Hire at least one Post-Bac Fellow • Hire more women scientists • Diversity training for management and others that need it FY 2002 Plans

ACTIVITY AREA 2: Communicate Job Openings through Channels Read by Minority Students FY 2001 Accomplishments • Posted all ESD jobs on the IMDiversity.com Web pages and other sites visited by minorities • Sent information on Post-doc openings and Post- Baccalaureate Fellowship to Department Chairs at colleges/universities with large minority enrollments FY 2002 Plans • Work with HR to improve methods for reaching minority/female job seekers

ACTIVITY AREA 3: Nurture a Diversity Culture within ESD FY 2001 Accomplishments • Worked to foster a working environment friendly to minorities, where everyone feels comfortable— ESD hired two African-Americans and two Hispanics.— ESD hired one female scientist and promoted women to Program Head and Deputy Program Head positions. • Tasked the ESD Professional Staff Committee to recruit and hire minorities, especially women applicants

  7. ACTIVITY AREA 3: Nurture a Diversity Culture in ESD (Cont.) • ESD will provide a course in November to improve English language verbal communication skills for those whose first language is not English FY 2002 Activities
