The Louvre. History. The Musée du Louvre was first opened on the 10 th of August 1793. It was closed between 1796 to 1801 because of structural problems with the museum. When it first opened the museum had 537 paintings as well as 184 other objects of art. The Louvre Pyramid.

The Louvre Pyramid • The Louvre Pyramid is a large metal and glass pyramid surrounded by three smaller pyramids in the main courtyard in front of the museum. • It was completed in 1989 and is 21.6 metres high.
The Louvre Today • The Louvre contains more than 380,000 objects and displays 35,000 works of art in 2014. • It received over 9.7 million visitors in 2012 making it the worlds most popular museum. • The Mona Lisa the museums most famous attraction has been displayed permanently since 1797.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi • The Louvre Abu Dhabi is a planned museum set to open in 2015. • Artwork from around the world will be showcased in the museum, with particular focus on Eastern Art. • The museum will be located on an island off the coast of Abu Dhabi. • It is expected to cost (construction, art deals, Louvre name) over €830 million.
