Course of the Falklands War Created by Aaron Yonke Bay Port High School
Aims and Goals • Complete and fill this out on your own tonight • Conflict would progress as follows • Air Sea Land
Strategy and Tactics in Air • UK hamstrung • Distance from base and outnumbered 34 to 100 • UK Harrier jet provides HUGE advantage • Effectively contain Argentine air force • Limited to ACC • Argentina had capability to eliminate UK ACC and effectively end war in 1 day • Continue to harass land operations
Strategy at Sea • New technology played large role • UK limited by location, relied on ACC • Protect ACC at all costs (had 2 in conflict) • Nuclear Subs provide UK advantage • ARG aimed to disable UK ACC • Use of Exocet Missiles
General Belgrano May 2 • Argentine ship, equipped with Exocet missile, near TEZ • Viewed as threat to UK ACC • Thatcher orders HMS Conqueror to attack • 368 Killed, Argentine Navy returns home • HMS Sheffield sunk 2 days later, but UK in control of sea
Land War • UK goal was to take Stanley (capital) while ARG aimed to hold isles • May 21st 3000 UK troops land @ East Isle • UK ships unload supplies, suffer heavy attacks • Split forces into 2 to take Stanley • UK first victory @ Goose Green (deception) • UK arrives near Stanley, initial setbacks, take Tumbledown Hill, ultimate victory June 14th
Impact @ Home front • Limited on both sides, no rationing, air raids, targeting of civilians • ARG had conscription, UK did not • Both countries censored media • Arg had larger social impact • Disassociation with anything western culture
Role of US • Both sides knew importance of US • Conflict had no interest in US/USSR struggle • US aids UK • Provides missiles and resources (fuel) • Support at UN
Role of UN • Tried to limit/end conflict by • Negotiating for peace • Limit escalation of conflict • Initially condemned Argentina, gave UK moral high ground • Sentiments shift, UN Security Council votes on ceasefire resolution, UK veto w/ US support
Results • ARG-700ish UK-252 Falklands-3 • No Treaty, UK regains control • Argentina • Military Junta is out, lost hope of Malvinas • UK • Thatcher Nationalism Economy • Dispute carries on to this day
