American Non-Violence: MLK, Jr. • Examples of non-violence by MLK, Jr. • Organized the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott (in response to Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat). • African community refused to ride the public bus system for 385 straight days to protest the unfair treatment & Jim Crow Laws. • Organized sit-ins, protests, and boycotts in Birmingham, Alabama over laws they felt were unjust. • In 1963, he organized the march on Washington to highlight the civil rights movement.
Non-Violence in S.E. Asia: ThucQuangDuc • Buddhists in Vietnam were oppressed by the Catholic president, Ngo Dinh Diem. • Passed laws to discriminate against Buddhists: • favored Catholics for public service and military promotions, as well as in the allocation of land and tax breaks. • Catholics often looted, raided, and destroyed Buddhist pagodas (altars). • Diem eventually banned the use of Buddhist flags, especially during the holiday of Vesak. • When Buddhists defied the order, Vietnamese soldiers fired into the crowd, killing 9 people.
