  5. What Materials/Supplies Do I Need For This Class? • A full size spiral bound College Ruled notebook. At least 100 pages. • A sturdy two pocket folder • A black or blue pen only (colored inks like pink, purple, etc. are not acceptable.) • A #2 pencil • A highlighter (any color) • Glue Stick • **You will receive a additional handout on how to maintain your Interactive Student Notebook

How Will I Be Graded? • Concepts – 50% • Every day we take notes, there will be a concept grade • Grade Scale: • • Novice Challenge: (Take notes on task) 70 • • Competent Challenge: (Complete an activity or small quiz) 80 • • Proficient Challenge: (Complete an activity in class or in the interactive notebook) 90 • • Expert Challenge: (complete Moodle online quiz) 100 • Tests -- 30% • Tests are online through Moodle • Some weeks, a project may be given in place of a test • Classwork/Homework and Quizzes – 20% • Combination of in-class and out-of-class activities; Notebook checks also fall under this category • North Carolina Final Exam

Test Corrections • *Students who receive poor grades on tests in World History will have the opportunity to raise their test grades for one week after the test. • To qualify for this opportunity, students must satisfy the following requirements: • No unexcused absences or tardies that week • No classroom discipline (written up, sent out) that week • Interactive Notebook must be current • If these requirements are met, the student may take a remediation test in the following situations:

Cell phones, Blackberry's, iPods etc. • According to the student handbook, you are allowed to have these items, I will not allow for their use in my class. • ** There are no listening contracts available.** • Cell phones should be off, in your book bag and out of sight. • You will not text message, call, or listen to music. • If you are found using your cell phone in class or in the hallway etc. It will be taken from you and given to the office for only your parent to pick up • There is no negotiating this procedure.

  14. Guideline #1 Classroom Guidelines Be in your assigned seat and working on the assigned Warm Up when the tardy bell rings. Guideline #2 • Bring ALL materials to class and take them with you when you leave. Guideline #3 • Follow directions the first time they are given Guideline #4 Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity

  15. Guideline #5 • Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the West Johnston High School Student Handbook. Special Guideline This classroom is a “No Whining Zone”. That means that there will be no whining, for ANY reason. Everything that I do is in your best interest, so please…respect the “No Whining Zone” this year.

Following the Rules and Guidelines Will Result In: • Verbal Acknowledgement • A Stress free learning environment • A pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere Not Following the Guidelines will result in: 1st – A Verbal Warning and Documentation 2nd – Action Plan, Parental Contact, A 30 Minute After-School Detention Fridays Only! 3rd – Disciplinary Referral

  18. Severe Clause • Any student who uses profanity, fights, damages school property (this includes the property of the teacher and other students), or is disrespectful (as defined by the teacher) will be written up IMMEDIATELY.

When You Are Tardy You are considered tardy when you enter the classroom after the final bell has rung Please see below for the procedures you need to follow: Tardy Without a Pass: Come in quietly. Sign the detention sheet on the clipboard. Fill out a Guideline Infraction Notice. When completed place it in the tray on the cart by my desk. Then sit down copy the objectives. *Remember to leave space in your notebook for the warm up and notes. Tardy With a pass: Come in quietly. Put your pass in the box on the bookshelf. Sit down copy objectives and get any notes etc. from your neighbor. 2 unexcused tardies count as an absence 4 unexcused tardies can will result in no credit for the course.

When You Are Absent • Excused Absence: • Go to the Homework Center on the bulletin board • Find your classes pouch • Retrieve your handouts etc. • Have a Seat • Get any notes etc. from your neighbor/Homework Buddy. • Check the teacher’s website for any other missing assignments. • Make sure to update your Interactive Student Notebook (always check the master copy) • See syllabus for unexcused absence policy.

  24. When You Finish Early Review your vocabulary words. Start working on tonight’s homework. Read (or reread) the chapter we are currently working on. You may not work on other classes work in my classroom. If I see it I will take it and keep it! I will also inform your other teacher that you were doing their work in my class.

  25. Turning in Papers • Place your paper on the desk next to you. • (Left side) • If/When you receive a paper, place yours on top and continue passing the stack to your left • I will come by and collect all stacks

Moving Around the Room • You must ask permission • Do not ask during a classroom discussion unless it is an emergency Hall Pass Procedures • If you need to leave class for any reason (bathroom, nurse, etc.) You must do the following: • Be given permission by the teacher • Sign out in the log (Blue Binder) • Take a hall pass and quietly leave the room. • Always make sure that you go to your assigned bathroom.

  28. End of Period Class Dismissal Students will remain seated until the end of class. The bell does not dismiss you the teacher does. I will let you go with the phrase “Have a nice day”.
