2. Life of St.Catherine The Holy Great Martyr Catherine was the daughter of the governor of Alexandria of Egypt Constus. Catherine received a most splendid of Hellenistic educations, having studied Roman and Greek literature, philosophy and even medicine. Moreover she was beautiful and smart. Young men from the most noble families of the empire sought her hand, but none of them was chosen. She declared to her parents that she would only marry the one, who would be more noble, rich, beautiful and wise.

3. St.Catherine’s mother was a secret Christian. She sent her daughter to speak to a saint elder who spent his life praying in a secluded cave not far from the town. Having listened to St.Catherine, he said that he knew the Young Man, Who surpassed her in everything, as “His beauty was brighter that the sunshine, His wisdom ruled the world, His riches was everywhere and His nobleness was infinite”. The image of the Heavenly Bridegroom produced in the soul of the holy maiden an ardent desire to see Him. Truth, which her soul was longing for, was revealed to her. In parting, the elder gave Catherine an icon of the Mother of God with the God-Child Jesus on Her arm and bid her to pray with faith to the Queen of Heaven - the Mother of the Heavenly Bridegroom - for the bestowing of the vision of Her Son. Catherine prayed all night and was deigned to see the Mother of God, Who asked Her Divine Son to look upon Catherine kneed before Them. But the Child turned His face away from Catherine saying, that He was not able to look at her because she was ugly, of poor lineage, beggarly and mindless like every person not washed with the waters of holy Baptism and not sealed with the seal of the Holy Spirit. Catherine returned again to the elder deeply saddened. He lovingly instructed her in the faith of Christ, admonished her to preserve her purity and to pray unceasingly; he then performed over her the sacrament of holy Baptism. And again Saint Catherine had a vision of the Most Holy Mother of God with Her Child. Now the Lord looked tenderly at her and gave her a ring. When the Saint woke up, she had a ring on her finger - a gift of the Heavenly Bridegroom.

4. At this time the emperor Maximian (305-313) came to Alexandria for a pagan feastday. The cries of the sacrificial animals, the smoke and the smell of the sacrifices and the rustling crowds at the arenas filled Alexandria. Human victims also were brought – there were consigned to death in the fire the confessors in Christ, who did not recant from Him under torture. Saint Catherine came to the emperor Maximian, confessed her faith in the One True God and revealed the misbelief and vagrancy of the pagans. Charmed by her beauty, the emperor tried to convert her to pagandom, but could not shake her faith. To demonstrate her the superiority of pagan wisdom, the emperor had 50 of the most educated men of the empire gathered. But she proved to be stronger in knowledge and wisdom so that they themselves came to believe in Christ and were burnt. The emperor, being unable to convince Saint Catherine, tried to seduce her with the promise of reign and power. But she was not attracted by riches and fame, which she denied. She declared that she was longing not for a queen’s robe, but for the one of a martyr. Having received a firm refusal, the emperor ordered to flog her and after two hours of torture she was thrown to prison for starvation. But Christ did not leave his bride and sent her bread with an angel and came to see the prisoner Himself to keep her strong. When the Empress Augusta and the military commander Porphyry came to prison, the saint martyr revealed before them the Christian teaching and they converted to Christ.

5. On the following day she was brought to the judgement court in good health, beautiful, radiant and strong. There, under the threat of being broken on the wheel, she was demanded to recant from the Christian faith and offer sacrifice to pagan gods. The saint steadfastly confessed Christ and she herself approached the wheels; but an Angel smashed the instruments of execution. Having seen this wonder, the empress Augusta and the imperial warlord Porphyry with 200 soldiers confessed their faith in Christ in front of public, and they were beheaded. Maximian again tried to entice the holy martyr, proposing marriage to her, and again he received a refusal. Saint Catherine firmly confessed her fidelity to the Heavenly Bridegroom -- Christ, and with a prayer to Him she herself put her head on the block under the sword of the executioner.   The relics of Saint Catherine were taken by the Angels to Mount Sinai. In the VI Century, through a revelation, the venerable head and left hand of the holy martyr were found and transferred with honor to a newly-constructed Transfiguration church of the Sinai monastery, built by the holy emperor Justinian (527-565).

8. The Main supposed directions of activity: In accordance with purpose and priority, charitable activity of the Fund is realized on the following directions: • Publishing activity; • The development of the mass media; • Spreading and fortification of spiritual valuables by means of joining spiritual traditions; • Financing the reconstruction of religion and buildings in different countries of the world; • Support of young families, parenthood and children; • Patriotic education in soldierly parts and educational institutions; • Financing action on ensuring the rights of children on formation.

9. Charitable activity of the Fund is realized in following forms: Grant contest outside of contest support • As a result of competitive selection winners get financial support for realization their own design thoughts. The Fund spreads information on subject of the open contest, his priority and condition, organizes open communication, allowing participant in specified periods tax demands with exhibit necessary documents, collects and classifies the demands, provides their expert estimation and, at declared period, informs on its result. • This form of the support is realized on base of the preliminary work of experts, which as a result of locked tender or analysis to situations come to a conclusion about issue grant concrete organization for realization of the project, not corresponding to declared competitive line, but actual with standpoint of the strategic problems of the Fund.
