Gender Differences in Multitasking Performance Kelly Bauer DaniDeVincentis Jason Taber Hanover College
Purpose • To address gender differences in multi-tasking ability • Research • Delbridge (2000) • Levine, L., Waite, B., & Bowman, L. (2007) • Lien, M., Ruthruff E., & Johnston, J. (2006)
Hypothesis • Scores in both genders will decrease from single task to multi-task • Greater decrease for men than for women (interaction between gender and task type)
Methods • Participants • Procedure Sample math question A circular coin has a radius of inch. When lying flat, how much area does the coin cover, in square inches? A. 3Π/4 B. 3Π/16 C. 6Π/16 D. 9Π/8 E. 9Π/64 Sample movie question “What is the gentleman in blue looking for?
Methods Continued • Mixed-subject design • Between subjects variable was Gender • Randomly Assigned • Single Task condition • Math test 10 min. • Film observation 5 min. • Multi-task • Total 10 min. • 5 min. film observation • Math test • IMs Sample IM Questions: “What time did you go to bed last night? “How is the weather today?”
Evaluation • Number of math questions correct • Number of movie questions correct • 2(gender: male or female) by 2(task type: single or multi) ANOVA with repeated measures on the second factor
Gender and Math Performance ME Test type, F(1,20)=57, p<.001 Int. F(1,20)=6.2 p=.02
Gender and Movie Observation Performance ME task type F(1,20)=68.3, p<.001 Int. F(1,20)=.899, p=.354
What does it mean? • Both genders performed worse in multi-task than single-task but the decrease was greater for males than females • Explanation: Females are socially oriented while males are task oriented (Twenge, 1997)
Implications • Teaching styles • Study methods • Career choices • Interpersonal relations
Future Research • Biological factors • Change over time • Cultural differences • Educational styles
